The first weekend is now complete in College Baseball where there was a couple of decent sized upsets on Sunday afternoon.

As always, you can follow our college baseball coverage on Twitter @CB_Daily and on Facebook.

  • The story on Sunday that could end up becoming the biggest one of the day is the fact that Arizona State freshman Cory Hahn appeared to suffer a severe injury sliding into second base against New Mexico. The full report on his condition with any updates is available here.
  • One of the top freshman in the country took to the hill in Gainesville with Florida RHP Karsten Whitson. He was the ninth selection in the 2010 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres but decided to become a Gators. He did not disappoint giving up only one hit in five scoreless innings while striking out nine batters out of the 16 batters he faced. Former MLB and current South Florida pitching coach stated to Scott Carter of Gatorzone.com “He’s very legit – tremendous fastball, good breaking ball. He showed great poise for a freshman. I was really impressed.’’
  • The TCU Horned Frogs picked up their first loss of the 2011 season on Sunday losing to Kansas 4-3 in 14 innings. The Horned Frogs got another good start on the mound by Steven Maxwell this time who gave up two runs in six innings. They struggled with getting runners in on Sunday leaving 18 runners on base.
  • Is James Madison and Bucknell still using the old bats? The Dukes completed the sweep on Sunday by winning 19-12. JMU finished the series by scoring 91 runs in the four game series while hitting .481 as a team with 23 home runs, a 1.056 slugging percentage, .588 on-base percentage, and 34 walks. They averaged 27.3 runs per nine innings right now as one of the games over the weekend was a seven inning affair.
  • The Cal-State Fullerton Titans are following their slow start from 2010 as they are 1-2 after the opening weekend with another game on Monday against Long Beach State. The Titans lost to North Carolina 4-3 in 11 innings on Saturday afternoon before bouncing back with a 2-1 victory over Long Beach State in the nightcap. Fullerton then dropped the Sunday matchup against the Dirtbags 8-5.
  • Kentucky and Georgia both ended up starting the season with identical 0-3 records. Kentucky ended up blowing a great starting pitching performance from Alex Meyer who went seven innings giving up three hits, three walks and two runs as he struck out 13 batters. Meyer topped out at 100 according to sources at the game while sitting around 97 all game. Kentucky’s offense just wasn’t there this weekend as they scored 11 runs in the three games in the College of Charleston tourney. Georgia on the other hand ended up getting swept by Stetson 8-4. The Bulldogs struggled throughout the 2010 season as they went 16-37 but three of those wins came against Stetson.
  • The Oregon Ducks finally got their first victory of the year after losing the first two games of the season in heartbreaking fashion to Hawaii. Madison Boer gave them eight shutout innings as he gave up only one hit and struck out seven Rainbow hitters.
  • Vanderbilt had a solid weekend going a perfect 4-0 with three victories over San Diego and a single win over San Diego State. Grayson Garvin had the best start of the weekend for the Commodores carrying a perfect game into the seventh inning on Sunday against San Diego. He ended up giving up a hit off his glove in the seventh before losing his shutout bid in the ninth. The 2010 Cape Cod Baseball League Pitcher of the Year ended up pitching a total of 8.1 innings giving up five hits and three runs (two earned) before being lifted.
  • New UNLV head coach Tim Chambers completed a four game sweep of Maine on Sunday by a score of 8-2. They got a grand slam homer in the first inning from Brandon Bayardi and Tyler Iodence pitched eight innings to get the win. The Rebels face an uphill battle with the TCU Horned Frogs as the Mountain West Conference favorites. You can check out Coach Chambers thoughts from the game by clicking here.
