DALLAS – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 14th year with its 2011 weekly surveys. I recently had the opportunity to catch up with Washington State head coach Donnie Marbut who is in the middle of his seventh season as the head coach of the Cougars. They currently have a 4-1 record after taking two out of three games at Cal State Bakersfield on the opening weekend and sweeping a doubleheader from UC-Santa Barbara on Saturday. Week 2 was full of upsets and great performances. Several teams continued to climb the rankings ladder and a few continued to tumble.

Number 2 ranked Florida (7-0) finished off a three-game sweep of Boston College (2-4) with a 7-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at McKethan Stadium in front of 4,213 fans. There was some fantastic baseball played on Saturday afternoon/evening between a couple of ranked squads. The highlight series of the weekend has been the Vanderbilt and Stanford matchup in Nashville. The Commodores grabbed the first game of the series on Friday night by a score of 2-1. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Mike McGee has spent the past few weeks tuning up his bat in the cage with assistant coach Mike Martin, Jr. The senior All-American’s performance in Saturday’s 16-3 rout of Hoftrsa left little doubt that he’s hitting on all cylinders.
McGee matched a career-high with six RBI on a 3-for-4 performance, highlighted by his fourth inning grand slam; his first home run of the season. Read the rest of this entry »
This weekend we see two major non-conference matchups between ranked teams with Stanford heading to Vanderbilt and Cal-State Fullerton visiting Fort Worth to visit TCU. No. 1 Florida (6-0) plated three runs in the seventh to snap a 3-3 tie en route to a 9-3 victory over Boston College (2-3) on Friday night. The Gators’ 20th-straight win at McKethan Stadium secured the weekend series, which will wrap up on Sunday at 1 p.m. Junior Preston Tucker (Tampa, Fla.) was 3-for-4 with a homer and drew a bases-loaded walk with one down in the seventh that brought in senior Bryson Smith(Watkinsville, Ga.) with the winning run. Freshman Daniel Gibson (Lutz, Fla.) (1-0) earned his first collegiate win, while sophomore starter Hudson Randall (Atlanta, Ga.) permitted one run in five innings of work. The Bay Area is scheduled for some nasty weather this weekend, and there’s even snow possibly in the forecast in San Francisco for the first time since the 1970′s. The USF Dons (0-4) look to turn around its season after a rough opening stretch against UCLA as they play UC Davis in a home/away/home series this weekend. Weather will probably get in the way Friday with a double dip sometime either Saturday or Sunday. I spoke with USF Head Coach Nino Giarratano this week about his teams efforts to rebound over the weekend.
