Top 100 Countdown: 14. Danny Hultzen (Virginia)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 14 in our countdown with Virginia junior LHP/First Baseman Danny Hultzen. He is from Bethesda, Md.and attended St. Albans where he played baseball all four seasons. He had a great senior season as he went going 13-0 with a 0.74 ERA with 140 strikeouts in 73 innings while hitting six homers and driving in 37 runs. He picked up several awards as he was named a high school First-Team All-American by Baseball America and Louisville Slugger in 2008. He also the All-Met Player of the Year as senior and First-Team All-Met as junior. His junior season saw him have a record of 7-1 with 0.35 ERA (52 IP, 105 K, 12 BB). He was selected in the 10th round of the 2008 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks but decided to head to Charlottesville to play for Coach O’Connor and the Virginia Baseball Program. LA Tech’s John Anderson to Miss Season

Lousiana Tech RHP John Anderson will miss the 2011 season after not fully recovering from right arm surgery. Anderson required the surgery after the 2009 season and had a medical redshirt last season. The fifth year senior had eight career wins and two saves in 36 career appearances while fanning 78 batters in 83.1 innings of work while winning two letters with the program. South Carolina’s Ethan Carter Dismissed

Ethan Carter will be transferring to Louisburg College to continue his career according to a report from The Daily Press.

The South Carolina Gamecocks are facing an uphill battle this year as they lost Blake Cooper and Sam Dyson from last year’s championship squad and received some bad news today. Head coach Ray Tanner announced today that sophomore RHP Ethan Carter was dismissed from the team for a violation of team rules. Read the rest of this entry »

For Horton’s Ducks, the Excuses are Over

The Oregon Ducks football program didn’t become national championship caliber overnight.  They didn’t have their first 10-win season until 2000, and since have created a culture of winning that has made them into one of the elite football programs. George Horton knows what it takes to build a championship caliber team, and looks to be set to take the baseball program in only its third season to the same heights that the football program has scratched and clawed at for decades to establish.  “In our first meeting last year we talked about going to Omaha,” Horton says.  ”If you don’t think about high goals and talk about them, you’re selling yourself short.  We even talked about going to Omaha in 2009.” Read the rest of this entry »

Top 100 Countdown: 15. Zack MacPhee (Arizona State)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 15 in our countdown with Arizona State junior infielder Zack MacPhee. He is a native of Phoenix, Arizona, where he attended Sandra Day O’Connor High School. As a junior in high school, he hit .455 with 33 RBI and 21 stolen bases. He followed that up in his senior season by hitting .433, driving in 35 runs and stealing 23 bases. In both seasons, he was named first-team all-conference while being a preseason All-American in 2008. He was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 22nd round of the 2008 MLB Draft but decided to head to Arizona State. Read the rest of this entry »

St. Cloud State Player to become Mayor

Current St. Cloud State shortstop Kent Koch has a huge week ahead of him. He will start up practice today for the upcoming 2011 season and will be sworn in as mayor of his hometown Loretto tomorrow. Kock won the mayoral race for a two year term back in November when he ran unopposed. Last season, Koch played in 43 games (29 starts) while hitting .333 with two homers and 19 RBI. Tony Gwynn completes Cancer Treatments

San Diego State head coach and Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn completed his eighth week cancer treatment for a malignant growth in a salivary gland. He spoke about the treatment with the  San Diego Union-Tribune saying: “I have to tell you, that was no fun, anyone who has gone through it knows what chemotherapy and radiation is like. I’m right there with you. My thoughts are with anyone who has done that.” Read the rest of this entry »

Top 100 Countdown: 16. Ryan Wright (Louisville)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 16 in our countdown with Louisville middle infielder Ryan Wright. The Fort Wayne, Indiana, native attended Homestead High School where he won three letters. As a senior in high school, he hit .453 with 14 home runs, 14 doubles, 43 runs scored and 45 RBI. In his junior season, he hit .452 with 10 home runs, 32 runs scored and 27 RBI and as a sophomore batted .440 from the plate with five home runs, 36 runs scored and 32 RBI. He picked up several awards during his high school days including being a Two-time All-State selection, Three-time All-Conference selection, and a Two-time All-Area honoree. Missouri releases 2011 Schedule

Mizzou Baseball has released its schedule for the 2011 season, which will get underway on Feb. 18 at the USC Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif. On the schedule are 30 games at Taylor Stadium, 22 road matchups and five neutral site contests.

The Tigers have 16 games against teams that qualified for last year’s NCAA Tournament and will face two teams (Charlotte and Central Arkansas) for the first time in school history. Read the rest of this entry »
