CBD Interview with Mark Marquess (Stanford)

Last week, I was able to speak with Stanford Head Coach Mark Marquess, heading into his 35th year leading the Cardinal. We talked about everything from his returning senior catchers, to Austin Wilson, AJ Vanegas and Brian Ragira coming in, as well as his stellar returning sophomore class. 12 Baseball Teams that Could Decide Men’s Capital One Cup Title

The fall season is now over with the Auburn Tigers defeating the Oregon Ducks in the BCS Championship game a couple of weeks ago. Top 100 Countdown: 4. Gerrit Cole (UCLA)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 4 in our countdown with junior RHP Gerrit Cole from UCLA. He is from Santa Ana, California as he attended Orange Lutheran High School where he was a three year letterwinner playing under Mike Grahovac. He had an outstanding senior season where he went 8-2 with a 0.46 ERA while totaling 121 strikeouts and walking 18 batters in 75.2 innings. Heading into the 2008 MLB Draft, Perfect Game Crosschecker rated him the best high school player in the country while Baseball America had him fourth. Cole was selected by the New York Yankees with the 28th overall selection as he slid as he told many teams he wanted to attend college. Cole lived up to his side of the bargain as he refused a multi-million dollar contract to attend UCLA. Read the rest of this entry »

Dillon Hazlett transfers to Emporia State

UPDATED AT JAN. 25th at 12:00PM
UNC infielder Dillon Hazlett has transferred to Emporia (KS) State as he is now listed on the roster of the Hornets for the upcoming season. Hazlett started the 2010 season as the starting first baseman but ended up losing his starting job around the midseason. In sixty games last season, he had a .324 batting average (third best on the team) while hitting four homers and driving in 54 runs. (second highest total on team). Read the rest of this entry »

Michael Clevinger off The Citadel’s Baseball Team

The Citadel’s sophomore RHP Michael Clevinger has been removed from the team’s roster after being listed early this weekend. According to sources, Clevinger has left the school. The sophomore righty was expected to be a key part of the Bulldogs pitching rotation as he made 16 appearances (15 starts) while going 5-3 with an ERA of 5.15 in 92.2 innings pitched. He was even better in Southern Conference play as he went a perfect 4-0 with an ERA of 5.08 in 10 Southern Conference games. Read the rest of this entry »

SIU Closer Lee Weld out for the Season

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois sophomore right-handed pitcher Lee Weld is going to miss the 2011 season with a shoulder injury, interim head coach Ken Henderson announced Monday.

Weld had surgery on Jan. 6 to repair a partially torn labrum in his throwing shoulder. Read the rest of this entry »

2011 CBD Season Preview: Southern Conference

The 2010 season was a historic season for the Southern Conference.   After getting 2 teams in Regionals in 5 of 6 previous years, along with the SOCON tourney champion and regular season champion(The Citadel) 2 teams, College of Charleston and Elon earned an at-large bid putting 3 SOCON teams in NCAA postseason for the first time in history of the league. In 2010 the SOCON finished the season with 7 teams with RPI in the top 75. Kansas State announces Staff Changes

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State head baseball coach Brad Hill announced today a restructuring of his coaching staff with the hiring of two new assistant coaches and the transitioning of long-time assistant coach Sean McCann.

Former Kansas hitting coach John Szefc (pronounced CHEF) has been named Associate Head Coach and will serve as the team’s hitting coach. Also, former Wildcat assistant Josh Reynolds has been hired as the pitching coach. Read the rest of this entry »
