South Florida releases 2011 Schedule

TAMPA- University of South Florida head coach Lelo Prado announced the 2011 USF baseball schedule on Monday, a slate that includes seven 2010 NCAA Tournament participants, seven that have appeared in 2011 preseason rankings and nine in-state opponents.

“This, once again, is a great schedule,” said Prado, who begins his fifth season as coach of the Bulls. “I could easily schedule 40 wins a year but that is not what we’re about. We are trying to win a BIG EAST Championship and move on to a regional. The only way to be the best is to play the best.” Read the rest of this entry »

2011 Big East Baseball Preseason Poll

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After winning a school-record 48 games and advancing to the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 1994, Connecticut has been chosen as the favorite to win the 2011 BIG EAST baseball championship by the league’s 12 head coaches.

The Huskies received nine of a possible 11 first-place votes in the preseason poll. The coaches also chose Connecticut outfielder George Springer as the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year and named righthanded pitcher Matt Barnes the BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Anthony Rendon is Ready to Go

Anthony Rendon received full clearance to resume all baseball activity after being on the sidelines for the last five months, according to Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle. Anthony suffered his second major ankle injury in the last two summers when he had a fracture dislocation on July 14th in a Team USA exhibition game. In 2009, he tore ligaments in that same ankle. Rendon won the 2010 Dick Howser Award given to the top college baseball player in the country after hitting .394 with 26 homers and 85 RBI. Read the rest of this entry »

Top 100 Countdown: 21. Mikie Mahtook (LSU)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 21 with LSU junior outfielder Mikie Mahtook. He is from Lafayette, Louisiana, and attended St. Thomas More High School. He had an outstanding senior season a .450 average with 13 home runs, 45 RBI and 25 stolen bases while being named  2008 First Team All-State. He was selected in the 2008 MLB Draft in the 39th round but decided to head to LSU. Read the rest of this entry »

CBD Interview with Rich Maloney (Michigan)

College Baseball Daily continues our series of interviews with coaches from across the country today with Michigan Head Coach Rich Maloney. He is entering his ninth season in charge of the Wolverines baseball program. He has led them to four NCAA Tournament appearances (2005, ’06, ’07, ’08) while hosting a regional during the 2008 postseason. We continue the list today with number 22 with Oregon junior LHP Tyler Anderson. The Las Vegas, Nevada, native attended Spring Valley High School where he won four letters for Mike Gomez. Lafayette starts construction on New Hitting Facility

Construction crews broke ground on Dec. 27 for the Morel Field House, an indoor batting facility that will be used by the Lafayette baseball and softball programs.

The generosity of Don Morel ’79, a former Lafayette pitcher, allowed for the construction of the facility, which is scheduled to be ready for use by the home portion of the 2011 baseball and softball seasons. Read the rest of this entry »

Top 100 Countdown: 23. C.J. Cron (Utah)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 23 with Utah junior catcher C.J. Cron. The Phoenix, Arizona, native attended Mountain Point High School. He had a solid senior season hitting .421 with eight home runs and 35 RBI. He ended up setting school records in that season for doubles, RBI and least strikeouts. He picked up several awards during his high school days including being named twice as all-state, all-region, all-city and a member of 5A State All-Star Team. His biggest honor came after his junior season in 2007 which he hit .419 with 46 RBI and 8 home runs in 30 games while being named Louisville Slugger Honorable Mention All-American. The Chicago White Sox selected him in the 44th round (1,320 overall) but decided to head to Utah to continue his baseball career. Read the rest of this entry »
