2011 NCBWA Division I Preseason Poll

DALLAS – TCU is No. 1 nationally for the first time in school history in the 2011 National Collegiate Baseball Writers poll.

Coach Jim Schlossnagle’s squad finished 54-14 a year and third in the university’s inaugural trip to the NCAA World Series after downing preseason No. 1 Texas in the 2010 NCAA Austin Super Regional. The 2010
NCBWA Coach of the Year welcome ’10 NCBWA Freshman of the Year and team ace (16-0 to lead the nation in wins) Matt Purke among a stellar cast of returnees. The Horned Frogs also gained a No. 1 rating in the pre-2011 Collegiate Baseball poll. Read the rest of this entry »

Nolan Belcher Out for the Season

South Carolina junior LHP Nolan Belcher will miss the entire 2011 season as he will soon have surgery on his left arm for a torn Ulnar Collateral Ligament which is commonly referred to as Tommy John surgery. Belcher made eleven appearances (six starts) while going 3-1 with a 2.43 ERA last season for the defending national champions. He had a solid summer with the Orleans Firebirds in the Cape Cod Baseball League in seven appearances (one start) with a 1-0 record and a 1.93 ERA. He was outstanding as he struck out 15 batters in 9.1 innings of work. Read the rest of this entry »

2011 CBD Season Preview: West Coast Conference

The West Coast Conference was dominated in 2010 by the San Diego Toreros who has a 19-2 conference record as they got the conference’s automatic bid into the postseason. They ended up getting sent to the Arizona State Regional where they went a disappointing 1-2 with both losses to Hawaii and the victory coming over Milwaukee. Portland came in second place in the conference with a 14-7 record while Pepperdine came in third at 12-9. San Francisco came in fourth at 10-11. There was a three way tie at fifth place at 8-13 with Santa Clara, Saint Mary’s and Gonzaga. Rounding out the conference was Loyola Marymount who went 5-16.

Louisville’s Keith Landers out to Midseason

Louisville redshirt sophomore LHP Keith Landers will be out until the second half of the season after undergoing his second surgery in the fall of 2010 after feeling discomfort in his throwing arm. LBSU’s Blair Field set for Makeover

Long Beach State is currently looking to renovate Blair Field which has served as the Dirtbags home field since 1958. The stadium received a renovation in 1993 which included new seats, a new roof, new lights for 1.4 million dollars.

The new plans for the stadium is to build a practice infield down the left field line, new modern batting tunnels, and part of the right field wall will be shortened to accommodate a new bullpen. The final piece of the project will be new lights to solve shadows in the gaps and center field during night games. The current estimate on the costs of this project is between 8-12 million. Southern Miss Announces Expansion Plans for Pete Taylor Park

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball program announced an expansion plan for its playing facility, Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field, at its annual preseason banquet Saturday night at the Thad Cochran Center.

The expansion will add 1,358 new seats, including 220 deluxe chairbacks and 1,138 bench seats, as the length of the grandstand will expand beyond the reaches of each dugout. Read the rest of this entry »

Texas and Cal-State Fullerton win Alumni Games

Both Cal-State Fullerton and Texas hosted their annual alumni games on Saturday afternoon with both squads walking away with victories over the alumni.
