Houston Baseball Visits Texas Children’s Hospital

HOUSTON – Members of the University of Houston baseball team took a trip across town to spend time with patients at Texas Children’s Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

Top 100 Countdown: 41. Nick Ramirez (Cal-State Fullerton)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 41 with Cal-State Fullerton junior infielder/LHP Nick Ramirez. The Anaheim California native attended Katella High School where he played under Carlos Ayala and Jimmy Valverde. As a senior, he help lead the Knights to an Empire League championship in 2008 while taking home the league’s most valuable player trophy. He was also named a three-time All-Empire League first teamer (2006-08) and was also named the Knight’s MVP each of those years. Fresno State releases 2011 Schedule

FRESNO, Calif. – Head coach Mike Batesole announced the 2011 baseball schedule Friday morning. The season features 34 home games with series against Oregon State, Washington State, San Diego and Ohio State. The Bulldogs face four opponents who appeared in last’s NCAA Tournament. St. Mary’s releases 2011 Schedule

Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary’s baseball team’s 2011 schedule includes early season road trips to Oregon, Southern California, and Utah, along with West Coast Conference road series at San Francisco, Gonzaga, and Pepperdine. The Gaels will play host to 26 games at Louis Guisto Field including non-conference series’ against UC Irvine and New Orleans, and WCC contests against Santa Clara, San Diego, Portland and Loyola Marymount. Georgetown Baseball to Alexandria?

According to the Washington Examiner, the Georgetown baseball team is currently exploring moving home games to Alexandria, Virginia to play at The Four Mile Run complex. The school would design and build a “state-of-the-art” facility for both baseball and softball in return for a multi-year lease on the fields. Read the rest of this entry »

2010 MLB Rule 5 Draft Results

Major League Baseball held the Rule 5 Draft yesterday during the Winter Meetings. If a player is selected in the Rule 5 draft, they need to be placed on a MLB roster for the next season and if they are put in the minor leagues, they will go back to the previous squad. The system was put into place to eliminate the ability for squads to stockpile young players in their system when other squads would have that player in the major leagues.  Read the rest of this entry »

Top 100 Countdown: 42. Harold Martinez (Miami)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 42 with Miami junior third baseman Harold Martinez. The Miami, Florida, native attended Braddock High School. He has an outstanding senior year where he hit .410 with eight homers and 27 RBI with him being named first-team all-county. He also had a strong junior season with a .500 average with three homers and 23 RBI. After his senior season, the Texas Rangers selected him in the 19th round but were not able to keep Harold away from Coral Gables as he went to play under legendary Hurricanes coach Jim Morris. Central Michigan releases 2011 Schedule

MOUNT PLEASANT — Early season trips to Florida and Las Vegas, a four-game set at Missouri and home games against Michigan and Michigan State highlight the 2011 Central Michigan baseball schedule.

Western Michigan releases 2011 Schedule

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan baseball program has released its 2011 schedule, which features 18 home games. The Broncos will also play non-conference regional rivals Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame.

Western Michigan is going to be well-tested on the road, as the Broncos will have 24 games under their belt before their first home game on April 1. WMU opens the season with four games at the Red Rider Classic in Lubbock, Texas, Feb. 18-20, before making its annual Spring trip down to Florida. Read the rest of this entry »

Austin Peay releases 2011 Schedule

CLARKSVILLE – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team recently wrapped up its fall practice schedule and head coach Gary McClure announced the program’s 2011 schedule, Thursday.

The Govs concluded their fall schedule before Thanksgiving and spent the largest portion of the slate bringing their 16 newcomers into the fold. In addition, Austin Peay saw seniors Jack Snodgrass and Ryne Harper, junior Greg Bachman and freshman Alex Belew return to the team after missing portions of the 2010 campaign. Tommy John Surgery

ABC Action News out of Tampa recently ran an excellent feature on younger baseball players in there teenage years having ulnar collateral ligament aka “Tommy-John” surgeries after being overused during Little League and other year round travel team leagues.  The feature makes the argument for pitch counts for young players.
