Top 100 Countdown: 36. Andrew Gagnon (Long Beach State)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 36 with Long Beach State RHP Andrew Gagnon. The Northridge, California, native attended Liberty High School in Brentwood where he earned four letters in baseball.  Gagnon struggled as the Sunday starter for the Dirtbags as a Freshman in 2009, going just 3-7 on the season, though he showed moments of brilliance that signaled hope for the future.   Read the rest of this entry »

Arkansas State releases 2011 Schedule

JONESBORO (12/14/10) – Thirty-two home games highlight the 2011 Arkansas State baseball schedule, which was released Tuesday.

Top 100 Countdown: 37. Scott McGough (Oregon)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 37 with Oregon RHP Scott McGough. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native attended Plum Senior High School where he was a two sport athlete playing basketball in addition to baseball. As a senior, he was named the East Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League Player of the Year and was named all-WPIAL. The Pittsburgh Pirates selected him in the 46th round (1,371 overall) but he decided to head out west to play for legendary coach George Horton at Oregon. Read the rest of this entry »

Arizona State Violations Outlined and Reaction

On Wednesday afternoon, the Arizona State Baseball program learned of their punishment from the NCAA after seven major violations and two secondary violations from 2004 through 2009. This was Arizona State’s ninth major NCAA violation in school history, with previous cases taking place in 2005 (football), 1997 (men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track), 1988 (men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track), 1986 (men’s basketball), 1985 (baseball, men’s gymnastics, wrestling), 1980 (football, men’s track (indoor and outdoor), 1959 (football) and 1954 (football). Arizona State University Issues Statement on NCAA Infractions Decision

The findings of the NCAA concerning the ASU baseball program fall principally into four categories:

1) Violations stemming from poor record keeping
2) Making more than the permissible one phone call a week to recruits
3) The improper recruitment of one player
4) Use of student managers during practices

The essence of the NCAA’s findings, as stated in the NCAA news release, is, “The violations were the result of poor record keeping, failure to monitor and a cavalier attitude on the part of the former head baseball coach to NCAA regulations.”

Oregon State releases 2011 Schedule

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State baseball team is slated for 24 games against NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago in a 2011 schedule that was announced Wednesday by head coach Pat Casey said.

NCBWA releases 2011 Preseason All-Americans

Returning Dick Howser Trophy winner 3B Anthony Rendon of Rice leads a team of collegiate standouts along with World Series returnees from the last stand at historic Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb: champion South Carolina’s CWS Most Outstanding Player OF Jackie Bradley, Jr., and relief ace Matt Price, pitchers Matt Purke, Steven Maxwell, Kyle Winkler and OF Jason Coats of TCU, Florida State’s all-purpose utility standout Mike McGee, SP Gerrit Cole of UCLA, Florida’s Austin Maddox and Preston Tucker, Clemson OF Jeff Schaus, and Oklahoma 3B Garrett Buechele. College of Southern Nevada loses 20 Scholarships

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that the College of Southern Nevada will lose 20 scholarships for the next two seasons (starting 2011-2012 school year) for three rule violations under former coach and athletic director Chris Sheff. Toledo releases 2011 Schedule

TOLEDO, OH – Toledo will compete in 56 games over the course of its 2011 season, Head Baseball Coach Cory Mee announced today. Unfortunately for the Rockets, 41 of the contests will take place away from Scott Park. Top 100 Countdown: 38. Riccio Torrez (Arizona State)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 38 with Arizona State junior infielder Riccio Torrez. The Phoenix, Arizona, native attended Brophy Prep where he won four letters. In his junior season, he hit .430 with 16 homers which were school records in each category. He was also a member of the 2007 USA Baseball Junior National Team as he hit .429 while being named to the All-Tournament Team. The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Torrez in the 32nd round but he honored his commitment to Arizona State where he continued his baseball career. Read the rest of this entry »

SIU names Ken Henderson as Interim Head Coach

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois associate head baseball coach Ken Henderson was named the interim head coach for the 2011 season, Director of Athletics Mario Moccia announced Tuesday.

Henderson, 50, succeeds his longtime friend Dan Callahan, who passed away on Nov. 15. For Henderson, the 2011 season marks his 21st year working with the Saluki baseball program. Read the rest of this entry »
