Top 100 Countdown: 28. Austin Wood (USC)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 28 with USC junior RHP Austin Wood. The Niceville, Florida native attended Niceville High School where he had a standout career. As a junior in high school, he went 6-2 with a 1.35 ERA in 13 appearances (11 starts). He was named a third team All-American and first team All-Region from Rawlings. He also was named honorable mention All-State. He was drafted in the 2008 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros in 36th round but decided to head to Florida State to play under Mike Martin Sr. Read the rest of this entry »

UConn-Avery Point’s Roger Bidwell Honored

Kyle CummingsUConn-Avery Point head coach Roger Bidwell will be honored by the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Association with the 2011 Gold Key Award. Bidwell coached the UConn-Avery Point baseball team to the 2010 NJCAA Division 2 final where they lost to LSU-Eunice 10-2. Bidwell has spent the last 29 seasons in charge of the program going 828-327-7 overall while making the team a perennial NJCAA playoff contender. Read the rest of this entry »

Top 100 Countdown: 29. Nick Martini (Kansas State)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 29 with Kansas State junior CF Nick Martini. The Crystal Lake, Illinois, native attended Prarie Ridge High School where he was a three year letter winner and three time Illinois All-State selection.  While in high school, he was a career .474 hitter, with 55 doubles, 6 triples, 14 HR and 101 RBI.  As a senior, he was rated the top hitter in Illinois by Prep Baseball Report, and led his team to the 2008 Illinois State title.  Martini was not drafted out of high school.

Former Clemson Coach Bill Wilhelm Passes Away

Former Clemson coach Bill Wilhelm passed away this morning at Oconee Memorial Hospital in Seneca, South Carolina. He spent 36 years as the head coach of the Tigers accumulating a 1,161-536-10 record retiring after the 1993 season. Read the rest of this entry »

Top 100 Countdown: 30. Grayson Garvin (Vanderbilt)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 30 with Vanderbilt junior LHP Grayson Garvin. The Suwanee, Georgia, native attended high school at the Wesleyan School where he was a four year letter winner including being a starter in each of his final three seasons. He helped lead the team to the Regional Championship in 2007 and 2008 while helping them go to the State Final Four in 2006-08 and winning the 2008 State title. He picked up several awards during his career including being named the 2007, 2008 Region Player of the Year, 2008 Rawlings and Louisville Slugger All-American, Sports Illustrated/ Takkle Top 100, a member of the 2007 Gwinnett Dugout Club 1st team and 2008 Gwinnett Dugout Club Pitcher of the Year. He was selected by the Houston Astros in the 45th round of the 2008 MLB Draft but decided to hold true to his commitment to Vanderbilt.

Hofstra releases 2011 Schedule

Hempstead, NY – Six 2010 NCAA Tournament teams, including Miami (FL) and College World Series participant Florida State, highlight the 2011 Hofstra University Baseball schedule, which was announced today by Head Coach Patrick Anderson.

The Pride’s non-conference slate features 21 games against 11 opponents, who combined to post 345 wins last year. “Our non-conference schedule is challenging,” said Coach Anderson. “But we want to challenge our players and help them get better by facing the best competition we can.” Read the rest of this entry »

Top 100 Countdown: 31. Noe Ramirez (Cal-State Fullerton)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 31 with junior RHP Noe Ramirez from Cal-State Fullerton. The East Los Angeles, California native attended Alhambra High School where he won four letters. He had a career record of 27-7 with an ERA under 2.00 and 298 career strikeouts while being named a four-time all-league member while bringing the school to four straight league championships. He was also an accomplished hitter never hitting below .350 while having a batting average of .511 as a senior. He decided to continue his college career at Cal-State Fullerton.
