NATCHITOCHES – The 2011 Northwestern State Demon baseball team is expected to field its most talented squad in years.

The same can be said about the 56-game slate that was released on Wednesday.

Highlighting the schedule includes a 3-game home series with BYU to open the season, a home game against 2009 College World Series participant Southern Mississippi, home games against in-state rivals Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe and Louisiana Tech, road series at Tulane and Alabama, and single-game road treks to Mississippi State, LSU and Baylor.

“It’s by far the most difficult schedule we’ve put together in quite some time,” said Demon head coach J.P. Davis who will be welcoming back a handful of starters from last year’s squad that finished just a half-game out of winning its 10th Southland Conference championship.

The Demons will open the season with a 3-game series against BYU on Feb. 18-19 in Brown-Stroud Field. That will be followed with a single-game visit to Mississippi State on Feb. 22. The Bulldogs are coached by former Demon head coach John Cohen.

After that, NSU will host the Northwestern State Invitational Feb. 25-27 in a round robin event that will include the University of New Orleans, Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana-Monroe.

NSU will then take it to the road for a 2-game series at Tulane (March 1-2) followed by a 3-game slate at Alabama (March 4-6). The Crimson Tide, who are coached by former NSU head coach Mitch Gaspard, lost in the Super Regional round of the NCAA tournament last year after posting 42 wins.

The Demons will open Southland Conference play in a March 11-13 series at McNeese State before hosting Southern Mississippi on March 15.

SLC series at home includes Stephen F. Austin (March 18-20), Nicholls (April 8-10), Texas State (April 21-23), Central Arkansas (May 6-8), and Southeastern Louisiana (May 19-21).

The Demons will visit LSU on April 26 and Baylor on May 11. Both were 2010 NCAA Regional participants with LSU going 1-2 at the Los Angeles Regional and Baylor getting knocked out of the Fort Worth Regional by eventual champion TCU. The Tigers will enter the 2011 season ranked 15th in the nation by Collegiate Baseball while Baylor is tabbed at No. 39.

The Southland Conference tournament will take place May 25-28 and will be hosted by Texas State.
