College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the countdown today at number 37 with Oregon RHP Scott McGough. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native attended Plum Senior High School where he was a two sport athlete playing basketball in addition to baseball. As a senior, he was named the East Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League Player of the Year and was named all-WPIAL. The Pittsburgh Pirates selected him in the 46th round (1,371 overall) but he decided to head out west to play for legendary coach George Horton at Oregon.

In his freshman campaign in 2009, McGough made 18 appearances on the mound going 1-0 with a 5.21 ERA in 19 innings of work. He also played seven games in the field (five starts at shortstop) where he hit 67 (3-for-18) with one run scored. He spent the summer season in the Northwoods League with the Rochester Honkers. He had a 5-4 record and 2.54 ERA while making 29 relief appearances pitching a total of 46 innings. He showed excellent control as he walked 17 batters while striking out 37.
McGough had a breakout season as a sophomore in 2010 as he went 5-2 including four saves with a 2.45 ERA, while leading the team with 25 appearances and 58 and 2/3 innings. He continued his great control striking out 56 strikeouts while issuing just 14 walks. He was named Pac-10 Honorable Mention for his season.
Scott spent the summer with the USA Collegiate National Team. He went 1-1 with a 0.82 ERA, 13 strikeouts, in five relief appearances totaling 11 innings of work. Baseball America rated him as the 16th best prospect on Team USA (Link) while being 42nd on Frankie Pilere’s Top 2011 Draft Prospects on Fanhouse.com. (Link)
