Top 100 Countdown: 40. Carson Smith (Texas State)

CarsonSmithActionCollege Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 40 with Texas State’s Carson Smith. He is a 6-5 215 pound right handed pitcher from Midland Texas where he attended Midland Christian High School. As a senior in 2008, he was named District MVP and 1st team All-State. He was also named TAPPS 5A 2nd Team All-District in 2007 as a junior.

He continued his baseball career in 2009 at Grayson Community College in Denison Texas. After the season, he transferred to Texas State for his sophomore year. He had an outstanding season as he appeared in 24 games (13 starts) as he went 10-4 including 3 saves with a 3.10 ERA in a team high 104.2 innings pitched. He ended up striking out 94 batters in 104.2 innings pitched with his most impressive stat being six complete games.

Carson spent the summer in the California Collegiate League with the Santa Barbara Foresters. He ended up starting in three games for a total of 15 innings accumulating a perfect 3-0 record while only giving up one unearned run. He dominated the hitters as he struck out 25 batters while holding opponents to a .115 batting average. Baseball America named him the fifth best prospect in the league.
