Top 100 Countdown: 66. Cohl Walla (Texas)

CohlWallaTexasCollege Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 66 with Texas sophomore outfielder Cohl Walla. The Austin TX native attended Lake Travis High School where he was a four year varsity letterwinner while being a two-time captain. As a senior, he batted .435 with eight home runs as he went on to be named to the Third Team Class 4A All-State by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association and the Texas Sports Writers Association and District 25-4A Most Valuable Player. The Washington Nationals drafted Walla in the 43rd round of the 2009 MLB Draft but were not able to come to an agreement.

Northern Illinois Baseball Announces 2011 Schedule

Virginia Baseball Releases 2011 Schedule

The Cavaliers are slated to play 25 games against 2010 NCAA Tournament teams, including home series against ACC foes Florida State, Miami and NC State.

Charleston Southern adds 11 for 2011; Two Coaches

CharlestonSouthernBaseballCHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Southern baseball program and Head Coach Stuart Lake have announced 11 new additions to the team for the 2011 season. Included in the class are six players from the Palmetto State, two from North Carolina, and one each from Georgia, Virginia and California.

“Our assistant coaches, Charles Assey, Sid Fallaw and Jamie Rabon, along with our student assistant J.J. Reilly, all played tremendous roles in the recruiting efforts of these newcomers,” said Lake. “They have continued working hard and are already looking to our next group of recruits.”

Cincinnati releases 2011 Schedule

BrianClearyCincyCINCINNATI – A trip to Florida for the BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge and 28 home games highlight the 2011 University of Cincinnati baseball schedule. After falling one win short of a 30-win season, the Bearcats aim to surpass that mark this season and compete for the 2011 BIG EAST Conference Championship.

“We’re excited about our schedule, especially the challenges early,” said head coach Brian Cleary. “We look forward to 29 home games, including the Joe Nuxhall Classic and what promises to be an exciting conclusion to the BIG EAST season with consecutive home series’ to end the regular season.”

Top 100 Countdown: 67. Garrett Buechele (Oklahoma)

We continue the countdown today at number 67 with Oklahoma junior infielder Garrett Buechele. The Arlington TX native had an impressive career at Arlington Lamar High School where he won three letters. During his career, he had an impressive .421 batting average with eight homers and 65 RBIs while having a .430 batting average with 30 RBIs as a senior.

Florida International releases 2011 Schedule

MIAMI – After winning the Sun Belt Conference Championship and returning to the NCAA Regionals for the first time in eight years, the FIU baseball team will take center stage in front of a national audience when the Panthers open the 2011 season with a three-game series set to air on ESPNU and ESPN3, on February 18-20 at the FIU Baseball Stadium.

FIU’s Garrett Wittels will be chasing history against Southeastern Louisiana University as he chases Robin Ventura’s 24-year old record of hitting safely in 58-consecutive games. Wittels currently has a 56-game hitting streak, which carries over from the 2010 season.

New Mexico State Releases 2011 Baseball Schedule

LAS CRUCES – New Mexico State head baseball coach Rocky Ward recently released the 2011 baseball schedule with 32 games scheduled at Presley Askew Field and 21 away games.

The season starts Feb. 12 with the Annual Alumni game before opening the regular season, Friday, Feb. 18 with a three-game series against Houston Baptist.  Those games are the first of seven consecutive home games at Presley Askew Field.  The Aggies took on Houston Baptist last season, earning a sweep in Houston, Texas.

CBD Column: Scheduling Questions?

NCAA-BaseballLogoSmallThe LSU Tigers released their 2011 schedule a few weeks ago, which features your typical 56 games (30 SEC and 26 OOC). The interesting part is that they will only leave Alex Box Stadium for two out of conference road games and one neutral site game at Zephyr Field in Metairie, LA. Is it good for College Baseball to have a marquee program play mostly home games? I thought we would take this time to see how different coaches around the country put together their respective schedules.

Top 100 Countdown: 68. Kevin Tokarski (Illinois State)

KevinTokarskiIllinoisStateCollege Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 68 with Illinois State redshirt junior Second Baseman Kevin Tokarski. The Downers Grove, Illinois, native had himself an impressive senior season hitting .441 with 8 triples and 20 stolen bases, being named to the All-State team by the Chicago Tribune. He helped his team to a regional title during his senior season. Tokarski is the son of Gary Tokarski, who played football for the Miami Hurricanes.
