Vanderbilt participates at ALS Walk

VanderbiltPhotoGalleryThe Commodores helped raise awareness for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) by participating at a local walk.

The walk raised over $240,000 with the money going to nationally directed ALS research and other ALS-related programs. The Nashville chapter has seen amazing growth over the last few years growing from seven patients in 2003 to over 180 in 2009.

Iona Walks for Charity

IonaCharityWalkFifteen members of the Iona College baseball team attended the annual Diabetes Walk at White Plains High School on October 17, 2010. The walk consisted of teams who supported a friend or family and they competed in a friendly competition to raise money for the American Diabetes Association. The event also had games for children to play and free food available that met the needs of those with Diabetes. The Gaels participated in the walk and once over, helped clean up tables, tents, and garbage.

Top 100 Countdown: 71. Nick Maronde (Florida)

NickMarondeFloridaThe CBB continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 71 with Florida’s Nick Maronde. He is a 6’3 195 pound left-handed pitcher out of Lexington Kentucky where he attended Lexington Catholic High School. As a senior in high school, he had a record of 8-1 with a 0.54 ERA and struck out 129 batters in 77 innings while issuing 21 walks. He was named first-team all-state while also being named Co-Pitcher of the Year on the Lexington Herald-Leader All-City Team. Maronde was ranked No. 19 on Baseball America’s list of 2008 Top 100 High School Prospects, was No. 26 on Rivals.com High 100, checked in at No. 28 on RISE Magazine’s Top 75 High School Baseball Players and ranked No. 43 in the Class of 2008 Final Rankings from Perfect Game. The Oakland A’s ended up selecting him in the 2008 MLB Draft in the 43rd round (1,294th pick) but were not able to sign him as he went to the University of Florida.

Georgia releases 2011 Schedule

ZachConeATHENS-The Georgia Bulldog baseball team annually plays one of the nation’s toughest schedules, and 2011 will be no different considering five opponents made the College World Series last season. 

Georgia travels to defending national champion South Carolina, faces CWS finalist UCLA in California, welcomes Florida State and Florida to Foley Field and plays a home-and-home set with Clemson.

URI releases 2011 Schedule

JimFosterURIKINGSTON, R.I. – The Rhode Island baseball program has released its 2011 schedule, which is highlighted by a trip to South Carolina to take on the defending National Champion South Carolina Gamecocks.

“I think we have a very challenging schedule in front of us for the 2011 season,” said Rhody head coach Jim Foster. “For early non-conference games, we wanted to schedule some of the top teams in the country to both challenge us and help us develop for what lies ahead in the Atlantic 10.”

Clemson releases 2011 Schedule

JackLeggettClemsonClemson, SC – Thirty-two home games, 24 games against 2010 NCAA Tournament teams, and four games at Fluor Field in Greenville, SC highlight Clemson’s 55-game, 2011 regular-season baseball schedule, released Friday. The Tigers will also play South Carolina in a three-game series at three different sites over one weekend during the first weekend of March.

Twenty-four of Clemson’s 55 regular-season contests (44 percent) will be against teams that participated in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Six of the 25 non-conference matchups will be against 2010 NCAA Tourney teams, games against South Carolina (3), Elon (2), and Coastal Carolina (1). The Tigers will face conference foes Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, N.C. State, Virginia, and Virginia Tech, also teams that played in the 2010 NCAA Tourney. Clemson will not face Miami (FL) during the regular season.

Baylor releases 2011 Schedule

SteveSmithBaylorWACO, Texas - Baylor baseball head coach Steve Smith announced his program’s 2011 schedule Friday. The 54-game slate features 31 games at Baylor Ballpark, including a 14-game homestand, and includes 20 games against nine teams that participated in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

The 2011 season opens Feb. 18-20 when the Bears host Oral Roberts for a three-game set. Baylor hosted ORU for four games last season, dropping the opener before taking the final three games to start a seven-game winning streak.

USF Recruit waiting on Decision

OT_306340_FREE_baseball_4University of South Florida commitment and Alonso High School star Jose Fernandez is awaiting a decision by the FHSAA to grant him another year of eligibility. Fernandez turned 18 in June but was never held back from Hillsborough County school system and should be on a college campus. The problem is that Fernandez tried to come on two occasions to the United States from Cuba but was intercepted by the US Coast Guard. He was ordered to not play baseball or attend school in Cuba as punishment for trying to leave the country. He made a third attempt to get to the United States with the third time being the charm. He ended up enrolling at Alonso as a sophomore but should have been a junior. The FHSAA is investigating the situation and should have a decision soon on his eligibility. Fernandez is expected to be a high selection in the 2011 MLB Draft based on his 97 MPH fastball.

Clemson’s Kyle Parker faces off against NC State’s Russell Wilson

ParkervsWilsonClemson starting quarterback Kyle Parker will face off against NC State Wolfpack and quarterback Russell Wilson tomorrow. Both quarterbacks are members of the Colorado Rockies organization after being selected in the 2010 MLB Draft. Parker was picked in the first round by Colorado and ended up signing for $1.4 million while Wilson signed for 200,000.

We continue the countdown today at number 72 with Vanderbilt’s Jack Armstrong. He is a 6’7 225 pound junior right-handed pitcher from Jupiter Florida where he attended Jupiter High School. He was a three year letter winner in baseball while being named a Top-200 prospect by Perfect Game. He was named a 2007-08 Second Team All-Conference, AFLAC All-American Team, 2008 Rawlings Preseason All-American, and First Team All-Region Baseball. The Texas Rangers selected him in the 36th round of the 2008 MLB Draft.
