Top 100 Countdown: 51. Logan Verrett (Baylor)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 51 with junior RHP Logan Verrett from Baylor. The Corpus Christi TX native attended Calallen High School which was considered one of the best teams in the nation in 2008. As a senior, he went 18-0 with 0.67 ERA, 167 strikeouts, 12 complete game and three shutouts on the mound. His 18 wins was a school record and led the nation. At the plate, he ended up hitting .455 with seven home runs, 33 RBI and 46 runs as he helped lead the team to a 42-1 record bringing them to the Texas Class 4A state title. The team finished the season ranked ninth in the country according to the Collegiate Baseball/Easton Sports rankings.

He picked up several awards as a senior in 2008 including UIL 4A State Tournament Team member, MaxPreps All-American, EA Sports All-American, Texas Sports Writers Association Class 4A Player of the Year and first-team all-state pitcher selection, second-team TSWA all-state honors at third base, 2008 All-South Texas MVP and District 31-4A MVP.

As a freshman in 2009, Verrett had a fantastic season going 7-1 including three saves with a 5.13 ERA in 20 appearances (five starts). He ended up striking out 64 batters in 54 innings of work. He ended up leading the Bears in both wins (7) and saves (3).

Verrett’s sophomore season saw him go 5-3 including two saves with a 3.28 ERA in 16 appearances (14 starts). His strikeout to walk ratio was excellent as he struck out 97 batters while walking 23. Opponents struggled against him hitting only .257 off of him. He spent the summer of 2010 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Chatham Anglers. He was outstanding down there going 2-1 with a 0.87 ERA in six starts. He continued to show excellent control striking out 34 batters while walking five batters in 41.1 innings. He was selected to participate in the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star game where he pitched one inning giving up three runs on three hits and a walk. He was rated the 86th best prospect by Frankie Pilere for the 2011 MLB Draft (Link) while Baseball America named him the 19th best prospect in the Cape Cod Baseball League. (Link)

Looking forward to seeing Logan this year. Was very impressed by Cape performance. Saw him baffle A&M last year with a 13 K 4 hit shutout…
