Steve Selsky

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 62 with Arizona’s RF Steve Selsky.  The junior from Manhattan Beach, California, won a CIF championship with Loyola High School in 2007, a team that also included Danny Muno of Fresno State.  Selsky was named the Team MVP in 2008, and participated in the National Homerun Derby at Tropicana Field, representing California.

Selsky had a great Freshman campaign, hitting .318 in 34 starts.  His 7 homeruns and 21 RBI were good enough for him to be named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball, but the Wildcats failed to make the postseason.  Selsky broke out as one of the Pac-10’s top outfielders in 2010 with a .370 Batting Average, a team leading 9 homeruns, 52 RBI and 1.057 OPS.  Arizona was able to get to the postseason in 2010, going 1-2 in the Forth Worth Regional.

Selsky has played in the Cape Cod League the last two summers, starting out the 2009 season playing 7 games for Yarmouth-Dennis before moving over to the Orleans Firebirds.  He only his .212 with a couple of homeruns in his first season on the Cape, but returned to the Firebirds to excel in the wood bat league with 4 HR and 18 RBI while hitting .273.

The Colorado Rockies selected him in the 34th round in 2010, but Selsky decided to return to Arizona, with his impressive Cape Cod League, and the hopes of another stellar year in 2011, could be regarded as an early pick in the June draft.
