NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans baseball team will play 12 games against 2010 NCAA tournament teams as part of a tough 54-game schedule in 2011, head coach Bruce Peddie announced on Wednesday morning.

Highlighting the 12 games against 2010 tournament qualifiers is an in-season home-and-home against LSU. UNO will travel to Alex Box Stadium on Feb. 22 before hosting the Tigers at Maestri Field on May 17.

The Privateers have had their share of success as of late against LSU, including a 7-4 win over the then-No. 15 Tigers on Apr. 27, 2010.

UNO will visit the other 2010 NCAA tournament teams on the slate when they travel to Southern Mississippi (April 15-17) and Kansas State (May 13-15) for three-game series. The Privateers will also play four games at San Diego (April 1-3).

“We have a challenging schedule this coming season,” said Peddie. “Our team is certainly looking forward to playing some of the best competition in the country.”

This season, UNO will have to find ways to win on the road in order to have a successful season. The team will venture away from Maestri Field for 42 of the team’s 54 games, playing just 11 contests on the Lakefront.

The Privateers will open their 11-game home schedule on Feb. 19 against Southern before hitting the road for a stretch of two months and 32 games. A mid-week game on Apr. 19 against Nicholls awaits the team upon their return home, followed by a four-game weekend series against Temple (April 22-24).

Southeastern Louisiana will come calling on May 3 with a three-game series against North Florida (May 19-21) rounding out the season and home schedule. UNF is coached by former ULM and LSU head coach Smoke Laval.

Other highlights of the schedule include a four-game series against crosstown foe Tulane, a two-game trip to Mississippi State and four games against former Sun Belt rival Troy.

The Privateers will also participate in a tournament at Dallas Baptist and a three-team event at Liberty.
