BrianO'ConnorUVACHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The defending ACC Coastal Division champion Virginia baseball team, led by eighth-year head coach Brian O’Connor, has announced its schedule for the 2011 season. The Cavaliers are slated to play 25 games against 2010 NCAA Tournament teams, including home series against ACC foes Florida State, Miami and NC State.

“I am excited about the opportunity the 2011 schedule will give our players,” O’Connor said. “We will be challenged by our pre-conference schedule in preparation for 10 grueling weekends of ACC play. This schedule will provide an opportunity for our fans to experience some great college baseball in Charlottesville.”

The Cavaliers will not waste any time in jumping into tough competition as they open Feb. 18-20 at the Auburn Tournament in Auburn, Ala., where they will face UAB, Auburn and Arkansas State. Auburn played host to an NCAA regional last season. UVa has never played UAB or Arkansas State and will be facing Auburn for the first time since 2003.

UVa returns home the following week to start its 36-game home schedule with a midweek contest against VMI before a three-game weekend series against East Carolina, which visits Charlottesville for the first time in 15 years. The Cavaliers took two-of-three games last year at East Carolina in a highly competitive series.

The following weekend (March 4-6), the Cavaliers will play host to Cornell and Rider in a round-robin tournament.

Virginia’s ACC schedule starts with a pair of tough challenges as the Cavaliers play each of the conference’s 2010 College World Series participants. UVa opens ACC play March 11-13 at Clemson; it marks the Cavaliers’ first trip to Clemson since 2007.

The Cavaliers come home the following weekend for a three-game series with Florida State, which also played at the CWS in Omaha last season. Virginia will play host to Maryland the following weekend (March 25-27) and also has home conference series scheduled with Duke (April 15-17), NC State (April 22-24) and Miami (May 13-15). The Hurricanes reached the NCAA super regionals last year, while the Wolfpack played in an NCAA regional in 2010.

Four of Virginia’s road ACC series will come against teams that played in the NCAA tournament last year. In addition to the series at Clemson, Virginia is scheduled to travel to Virginia Tech (April 1-3), Georgia Tech (April 8-10), Boston College (April 29-May 1) and North Carolina (May 19-21). The Hokies, Yellow Jackets and Tar Heels all were NCAA qualifiers in 2010. Virginia will not play Wake Forest this season.

In non-conference play, Virginia will play home-and-home series with in-state foes VCU and Radford. The Cavaliers host VCU on April 26, then travel to The Diamond in Richmond a week later to face the Rams. The games will be rematches of the 2010 NCAA Regional opener, won by Virginia 15-4. UVa plays Radford on April 5 in Charlottesville, then faces the Highlanders in Radford, Va., on April 19. It will mark the Cavaliers’ first game at Radford since the 2003 season.

Virginia also plays non-conference games at home against William and Mary (March 1), Niagara (March 2), Marshall (March 8), James Madison (March 15), Towson (March 22-23), George Washington (March 29), Georgetown (April 12), Coastal Carolina (April 13), Richmond (April 20) and High Point (May 17). Coastal Carolina was a national seed and qualified for an NCAA super regional last year in the NCAA tournament.

The ACC Baseball Championship returns to Durham, N.C., from May 25-29 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The stadium is home to the Durham Bulls, triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.
