JimFosterURIKINGSTON, R.I. – The Rhode Island baseball program has released its 2011 schedule, which is highlighted by a trip to South Carolina to take on the defending National Champion South Carolina Gamecocks.

“I think we have a very challenging schedule in front of us for the 2011 season,” said Rhody head coach Jim Foster. “For early non-conference games, we wanted to schedule some of the top teams in the country to both challenge us and help us develop for what lies ahead in the Atlantic 10.”

URI opens the season with a three-game series at McNeese State (Feb. 18-20) before heading Palm Beach, Fla. for a pair of games against St. Bonaventure (Feb. 26, March 3), Northeastern (Feb. 27, March 4) and Western Michigan (March 2, March 5). The Rams will also face Florida International in Miami on Feb. 28.

Rhode Island heads back to the Sunshine State a week later for a three-game set against the Florida Gators (March 11-13), followed by a trio of games in Charleston, S.C. There, URI will take on Connecticut (March 18), Southern Miss (March 19) and the College of Charleston (March 20) before traveling to Columbia, S.C. to face off against the South Carolina Gamecocks, who won their first-ever national title a season ago.

“Our major goals this season will be to win the conference championship, compete in a regional and, ultimately, compete in a super regional and then knock on Omaha’s door,” explained Foster. “These goals are the same for us, year after year.”

The Atlantic 10 portion of the schedule will feature home series against Saint Louis (April 8-10), Saint Joseph’s (April 15-17), Temple (April 29-May 1) and Massachusetts (May 6-8).

The Rams will travel to play three-game conference series at Charlotte (March 25-27), La Salle (April 1-3), Richmond (April 22-24), and Dayton (May 19-21).

URI’s non-conference home schedule features games against Central Connecticut (March 29), Boston College (March 30), Quinnipiac (April 12), Sacred Heart (April 19) and Stony Brook (April 20).

Rhode Island will also face Boston College (April 5), Northeastern (April 6), Bryant (April 13), Brown (April 26), Maine (April 27) and Hartford (May 17) on the road.

“I feel as though we were able to put together a very attractive schedule for both our fans and players,” Foster added. “Right now, we’re just looking forward to getting the new season started.”

Atlantic 10 action will wrap up at the league’s 2011 Championship at Campbell’s Field in Camden, N.J., from May 25-28.

Good to see URI challenging itself by scheduling the tougher teams on their Southern trip. I commend Jimmy Foster with the way he has elevated the URI baseball program. Go Rams and Good Luck in 2011
