The Maryland Terrapins struggled last season to a 17-39 overall record and went 5-25 in the ACC under first year head coach Erik Bakich. The Terps will be a new team though in the 2011 season as they will welcome 22 newcomers as the class was rated 25th by Baseball America (LINK).

Coach Bakich is excited for  the season and expects to compete for an ACC title as he told The Diamondback, UMD’s Independent Daily Newspaper.

“I think everybody saw the disparity between the talent level between this team and the other teams in the conference. I think now that gap is either gone or very minimal. We’ll have a chance to compete because the talent level is what should exist in the ACC.”

Bakich has been an excellent addition to the Maryland program as the Terps seem to be on the right track on the recruiting side of things. They will be a new team in 2011 though with this large class coming in. We will find out early on though at how good they are early on as they open up the season in Austin against the Texas Longhorns.
