Vanderbilt’s Tim Corbin Recaps Texas Series

TimCorbinVandyVanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin caught up with VUCommodores.com to discuss how the two 12 inning fall ball games went over the weekend against Texas. Vanderbilt won the first game on Friday by a score of 7-2 before dropping Sunday’s game 7-5. Top 100 Countdown: 87. Garrett Wittels (Florida International)

WittelsHeadshotThe CBB continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 87 with Garrett Wittels of Florida International. He is from Bay Harbor Islands, Florida and attended Dr. Michael Krop High school in Miami, Florida. He posted a .420 average with six homers and 29 RBI as a senior. He was named Second Team All-Miami Dade by the Miami Herald while he was named to the Third team as a sophomore and junior.

Marshall University releases 2011 Schedule

MarshallUniversityLogoHUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University baseball head coach Jeff Waggoner recently released the 2011 schedule for the Thundering Herd ball club. The schedule consists of 56 games, including tilts with five NCAA Regional qualifiers, two of which advanced to the Super Regionals.

In 2010, Marshall finished with a 27-31 overall record and an even 12-12 tally in Conference USA. The 12 victories marked a school record for the most wins in C-USA play, while finishing fourth in the standings.

Franczek And Bradley Join UMass Baseball Staff

RyanFranczekUMassAMHERST, Mass. – Former Minuteman third baseman Ryan Franczek and recent Wheaton College graduate Ryan Bradley have joined the UMass baseball coaching staff, head coach Mike Stone announced on Monday. Both will begin their first season with the Minutemen in 2011, Franczek serving as an assistant coach and Bradley as a volunteer assistant.

“The addition of Ryan Franczek and Ryan Bradley provides us with two good young energetic assistant coaches,” said Stone. “Both are eager to learn and to adapt to the transition from player to coach. We look forward to what they both can bring to the improvement of our baseball program.”

Bradley Baseball Player Phil Kaiser Dies Monday

Updated October 19th at 12:25am

According to the AP Report, Phil Kaiser had an undiagnosed heart condition which was discovered in his autopsy. You can check out the AP article by clicking here. The press release from Bradley University is below.

PEORIA, Ill. – Phil Kaiser (Berwyn, Ill./Nazareth Academy), a junior utility player for the Bradley University baseball team, died early Monday morning after being transported to Methodist Medical Center of Illinois.  The cause of death has not been determined. Read the rest of this entry »

Top 100 Countdown: 88. Matt Jensen (Cal Poly)

The CBB continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 88 with Matt Jensen of Cal Poly. He is from Clovis California where he attended Clovis East High School. He picked up four letters playing under head coach Jeff Prieto where he hit .458 with six doubles, five triples, eight home runs, 21 RBIs and 36 runs scored. Jensen was also solid on the mound as he went 5-3 with a 2.29 ERA while striking out 55 batters in 52 innings as he threw two complete games and a shutout. He picked up several honors including All-Tri-River Athletic Conference honors all four years and also earned All-Valley and All-Regional honors. He was also named a third-team All-American as a senior. The Seattle Mariners selected him in the 11th round in the 2008 MLB draft but Jensen decided to head to Cal Poly to play under Larry Lee.

CBB Visit: Texas 7 Vanderbilt 5

AUSTIN, Texas — After falling behind 5-0 after four innings, the Texas Longhorns outscored the Vanderbilt Commodores 7-0 over the next eight innings to post a 7-5 win in a 12-inning exhibition at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday afternoon.

NECBL to add Mystic to the League

NECBLLogoThe Bristol Collegiate Baseball Club of the NECBL will be moving to Mystic Connecticut for the 2011 season after the league approved the move today. Mystic will play their home games at Fitch High School in Groton Connecticut. The team will pay for upgrades to the field which includes lights, fencing, seating and new dugouts. This is now the second franchise to move this off-season in the NECBL as the Lowell All-Americans relocated to Old Orchard Beach last month. Read the rest of this entry »

Santa Clara releases 2011 Schedule

SantaClaraBaseballSanta Clara, Calif.- Santa Clara baseball announced its 2011 schedule this week as the team starts fall baseball activities. The Broncos non-conference schedule is highlighted with series against South Carolina, Minnesota, Cal-State Bakersfield, Cal Poly, and Brown University.

SCU opens up the season on the road in Columbia, South Carolina when it takes on the 2010 College World Series champions in a three-game series against the Gamecocks.

Washington releases 2011 Schedule

TroyScottWashington, under second-year head coach Lindsay Meggs, opens the 2011 season at a tournament in San Marcos, Texas, where they’ll face Missouri State, Nebraska and Air Force Feb. 18-20.

The Dawgs return to the road the following weekend for a series at Cal State Bakersfield before opening a seven-game homestand March 3 vs. BYU.

The first Pac-10 series of the season opens April 1 at UCLA and the first home series of Conference play is April 15-17 vs. California.
