Top 100 Countdown: 80. KC Serna (Oregon)

KCSernaHeadshotOregonThe CBB continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 80 with Oregon infielder KC Serna. He is 6’0 185 pounds out of Ventura California as he attended St. Bonaventure High School where he was a three sport athlete for the Seraphs, playing football and soccer in addition to baseball. As a senior in 2008, he was the starting shortstop leading the team to a 26-5 record. He spent time on the mound as he went 9-1 record with 76 strikeouts. On the offensive side of the ball, he hit .500 driving in 30 runs to go along with 16 doubles, 3 triples, 5 home runs and 15 walks. He set several school records for career games played, RBIs, hits, doubles, steals and runs scored.

Former Blue Devil McCurdy Joins Duke Baseball Coaching Staff

Loyola-Marymount releases 2011 Schedule

LMUPhotoThird-year Head Coach Jason Gill released his 2011 baseball schedule this week after sitting down to preview the fall season and talk a bit about the 2011 campaign a few weeks ago. The schedule consists of 55 games, including 28 at home in Page Stadium.

The 2011 schedule features 13 games against 2010 NCAA Regional qualifiers, including three games against Super Regional participant Cal State Fullerton. All 55 games of the Lions’ 2011 schedule will have a live audio broadcast streamed in conjunction with Stretch Internet at LMULions.com. The games can also be viewed on Gametracker by accessing the links from the online schedule.

College Baseball Players Representing in 2010 MLB World Series

WorldSeriesLogoThe 2010 MLB World Series starts up on Wednesday with the San Francisco Giants hosting the Texas Rangers. Cliff Lee (Arkansas) will take the ball for the Rangers while the Giants will send Tim Lincecum (Washington) to the hill. The best conference this season with getting players into the World Series is the SEC as they have six alums of universities. The University of Miami, UC-Santa Barbara, and LSU are the leaders in alums participating with two each. Miami has Aubrey Huff and Pat Burrell while UC-Santa Barbara has Barry Zito and Michael Young. The LSU Tigers have both Mike Fontenot and Brian Wilson participating in the fall classic. The full list is below.

Top 100 Countdown: 81. Joe Panik (St. John’s)

JoePanikHeadshotThe CBB continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 81 with St. John’s junior shortstop Joe Panik. He is from Hopewell Junction, New York and attended John Jay High School. He was a four year letterwinner with the Patriots as he was a two-time team captain, two-time all-state selection, and two-time all-section honoree. As a senior he was named sectional, league and county player of the year while leading the team to a league championship.

Wake Forest Baseball Park gets a New Surface

WakeForestBaseballAfter months of anticipation, the third phase of renovations at Wake Forest Baseball Park is complete and the Demon Deacons are breaking in their new AstroTurf® field.

Wake Forest University purchased the half-century old baseball park from the Winston-Salem Dash in the fall of 2008. Although the facility had the perfect size and location, the previous owners had left the field in a state that was unsuitable for a competitive ACC team.

Joe Tremoglie added to St. Joe’s Coaching Staff

St.JoesBaseballPHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph’s head baseball coach Fritz Hamburg has announced the addition of former Hawk baseball player and assistant coach Joe Tremoglie to the SJU coaching staff. The 1996 graduate will serve as a volunteer assistant coach for the upcoming season.

Top 100 Countdown: 82. Scott Woodward (Coastal Carolina)

ScottWoodwardCoastalCarolinaThe CBB continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 82 with Coastal Carolina senior infielder/outfielder Scott Woodward. He is from Markle Indiana and attended Norwell High School where he led the team to a state championship as a senior. He finished his senior season with a .454 average including 60 runs, seven doubles, 24 runs-batted-in and 30 stolen bases. He was also outstanding on the mound going a perfect 8-0 with a 1.93 ERA. He was named First-Team All-Indiana selection as well as an All-Conference and an All-Area performer. He was also named to the Rawlings/Perfect Game Preseason Central Region All-High School Senior Team.

Wichita State Baseball reads to kids at L’Ouverture Elementary School

WichitaStateReadingWICHITA, Kan. – Two members of the Wichita State baseball team and one member of the men’s basketball team read to students at L’Ouverture Elementary School on Wednesday, October 20 as part of the Missouri Valley Conference “Just Read” program.

Senior Tim Kelley and sophomore Tobin Mateychick along with senior men’s basketball player Derek Brown took part in the program.

Kansas Finalizes Hoglund Ballpark Upgrades

Baseball TurfLAWRENCE, Kan. – Hoglund Ballpark, the home of the Kansas baseball team, received a $1.2 million facelift this summer as the Jayhawks installed AstroTurf USA’s Gameday 3D playing surface.

The entire field is covered in turf, with a different color and grade on the basepaths, at home plate and on the warning track. The pitcher’s mound is the only area with real dirt. The project was funded entirely through private donations to the baseball program, in an effort which began prior to the 2009 season.
