Ole Miss looking to replace Pomeranz

OleMissCatcherThe Ole Miss Rebels had a solid 2010 season as they made the Charlottesville Regional before bowing out to St. John’s. The biggest spot they will have to fill is number 1 starter Drew Pomeranz who led the squad with a 9-2 record with a 2.24 ERA. They also lost Aaron Barrett who also made 16 starts as he went 7-5 with a 4.34 ERA.

As fall practice has started, Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco has been focusing on the starting rotation which could be filled by JUCO transfers Austin Wright and R.J. Hively while incoming freshman Bobby Wahl could fill the openings.

Florida releases 2011 Schedule

FloridaTuckerMaddoxGAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida baseball program and fourth-year head coach Kevin O’Sullivan announced its 2010 schedule on Thursday. The Gators’ 56-game schedule features 35 games within the friendly confines of McKethan Stadium at Perry Field, where the squad registered a program-best 33-3 (.917) mark last season and is 90-19 (.826) during O’Sullivan’s tenure.

UF has 27 games versus opponents who advanced to the NCAA Tournament, including home series against 2010 College World Series champion South Carolina and Miami (Fla.), and will have six series totaling 19 games against teams that reached Super Regionals.

Renovations completed at Columbia’s Robertson Field

ColumbiaBaseballNEW YORK – Construction is complete on the upgraded Robertson Field at Satow Stadium, Columbia’s home baseball venue.

Satow Stadium, named in recognition of the generosity of 2010 Varsity C Athletics Alumni Award recipient Phillip M. Satow ’63CC, upgrades the Columbia baseball venue into one of the best in the Ivy League, if not the Northeast. The project included new seats behind home plate and the expansion of seating down the first base line, construction of a new home dugout, installation of a multimedia scoreboard and a new press box.

Top 100 Countdown: Number 97 Stewart Ijames (Louisville)

IjamesHeadshotThe CBB continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 97 with Louisville junior outfielder Stewart Ijames. He checks in at 6’1 and 201 pounds as he is from Owensboro Kentucky where he attended Owensboro Catholic. He was a five time letter winner at Owensboro Catholic being named All-State twice, All-Region and All-Area selection three times. He was named the state tournament MVP when the Aces won the 2005 state championship. During his senior season, he hit .542 with ten homers. The Milwaukee Brewers selected him in the 46th round of the 2007 MLB Draft but Stewart decided to head to Louisville to continue his baseball career.

Isaiah Howes facing Drug Charges

A few weeks ago, we reported that former Louisville baseball player Isaiah Howes shot and killed former Louisville football player Daniel Covington. (Link) When the police arrived at the scene and searched Howes vehicle they found marijuana in it. He has been charged on the drug possession charge but no decision has been made yet on if or when charges would be filed on the shooting incident.

Andy Wilson added to Cal-State Northridge Coaching Staff

AndyWilsonNORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Cal State Northridge baseball head coach Matt Curtis announced the appointment of Andy Wilson as a volunteer assistant coach, effective immediately.

“I am excited to add Andy Wilson to our staff,” stated head coach Matt Curtis. “He’s coached locally at College of the Canyons, and has experience coaching top-notch Division-I talent in the Alaskan Summer League. I’m confident that Andy’s going to have big impact on the development of our student-athletes.”

SEC Tourney looking to move?

BirminghamNewsHooverThe Birmingham Barons are currently exploring the option of building a new downtown stadium in Birmingham leaving Regions Park without a baseball tenant for the 2012 season. This would be an interesting development as Regions Park has served as the home of the SEC Tournament 14 out of the last 15 years. Hoover has stated they will keep the stadium in pristine condition without a chief tenant but it could affect the SEC’s decision where to hold the 2012 tournament according to a report from The Birmingham News.

Top 100 Countdown: Number 98 Jabari Henry (Florida International)

JabariHenryFIUThe CBB continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 98 with Florida International sophomore outfielder Jabari Henry. He is a 6’1 and 200 pounds from Orlando Florida where he attended Olympia High School. In high school, he was named the 23rd best player in the state of Florida and 124th in the country by Perfect Game. The Texas Rangers selected him in the 39th round but he decided to attend Florida International University.

Murray State freshman Thomas McGurk passes away

ThomasMcGurkMurrayStateThe Murray State athletic department endured a tragic loss Saturday evening when freshman baseball player Thomas McGurk was killed in a car accident in Murray.

“We are saddened by this tragedy and the loss of one of our student-athletes,” said Director of Athletics Allen Ward.  “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.”

Ron Rakowski added to Holy Cross Coaching Staff

Rhode Island Walks for Autism, Receives Support from Dayton and Fordham
