Top 100 Countdown: 80. KC Serna (Oregon)

KCSernaHeadshotOregonThe CBB continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 80 with Oregon infielder KC Serna. He is 6’0 185 pounds out of Ventura California as he attended St. Bonaventure High School where he was a three sport athlete for the Seraphs, playing football and soccer in addition to baseball. As a senior in 2008, he was the starting shortstop leading the team to a 26-5 record. He spent time on the mound as he went 9-1 record with 76 strikeouts. On the offensive side of the ball, he hit .500 driving in 30 runs to go along with 16 doubles, 3 triples, 5 home runs and 15 walks. He set several school records for career games played, RBIs, hits, doubles, steals and runs scored.

KC Serna decided to head north to Oregon to play under George Horton in the first year of the Ducks program. During his freshman season in 2009, he started 52 games hitting .228 with 14 runs, five doubles, one triple, 14 walks and nine stolen bases. He led the team with 19 RBIs and three homers. Serna was a threat on the basepaths with nine stolen bases in 12 attempts. He was a little disappointing in the field as he led the team with 17 errors for .931 fielding percentage.

He spent the summer of 2009 in the Northwoods League with the Mankato Moondogs where he was the starting shortstop. He ended up hitting .314 with 30 runs scored, 16 RBIs, 16 walks, seven doubles and two triples. He set the team record for stolen bases on the summer by stealing 25 bases in 27 attempts. In 2010, KC Serna had a breakthrough season hitting .348 with five homers and 37 RBI. He led the team in multiple categories: average (.348), on-base percentage (.419), hits (81), total bases (111) and stolen bases (14). He was able to lead the team to a second place finish in the Norwich (CT) Regional in the NCAA Tourney.

Serna spent the summer of 2010 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Falmouth Commodores. He spent the summer as the starting shortstop with a .255 with 22 runs scored, 18 RBIs, seven doubles and one triple while drawing 17 walks and stealing seven bases. He was named a Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star as he went 0-3 with a run scored.
