KyleSimonArizonaThe CBB continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 99 with Arizona junior Kyle Simon who is a 6’5 and 210 pounder right handed pitcher. He is originally from Los Alamitos California while he attended Los Alamitos High School. He was named All-Sunset league in his junior and senior season. During his junior year, he went 7-2 leading the team to a Sunset League Championship.

Kyle made 19 appearances (11 starts) during his freshman season in 2009 as he went a disappointing 3-5 with a 6.03 ERA in 74.2 innings. He struggled with getting batters out as he gave up 106 hits while hitters had a .342 batting average against him. He also had poor control as he walked 26 batters while hitting 14 batters and tossing nine wild pitches.

After the college season, he spent the summer of 2009 in the Northwoods League with the La Crosse Loggers where he made nine appearances (seven starts). He finished the summer with a 6-2 record including a save while having an ERA of 2.46 in 51.1 innings. KyleSimonAction

The 2010 season saw Kyle Simon make 19 appearances while starting 17 games (most on the team). He went 8-6 with a 4.27 ERA as he led the team in innings pitched with 109.2. He still struggled to miss bats as he gave up 132 hits while continuing to struggle with his control as he walked 37 hitters, hit 16 batters, and tossed six wild pitches.

He spent the summer of 2010 in the highly regarded Cape Cod Baseball League with the Orleans Firebirds. He ended up starting in seven games with a tough luck 1-2 record but had an outstanding ERA of 0.92. He seemed to figure out how to pitch this summer as his control was much better as he only allowed eight walks, two wild pitches, and two hit batters in his 39 innings of work. His work was good enough to get him into the CCBL All-Star game where he worked one inning giving up two hits and one unearned run. (CCBL All-State Game Live Blog|Recap). Frankie Pilere of Fanhouse.com recently ranked Simon as the 101st best pro prospect for the 2011 MLB Draft. (Full Article)
