TCU Baseball FORT WORTH, Texas – Randy Mazey, assistant baseball coach at TCU, has been promoted to associate head coach, Horned Frogs head coach Jim Schlossnagle announced.

“This is a well deserved promotion and honor for Coach Mazey,” remarked Schlossnagle. “As I’ve always said, he is one of the best pure baseball coaches in the game today, at any level. He has done a tremendous job on the field and will take a more prominent role in recruiting as well. We are excited to continue to have he, his wife, Amanda and their two children as a part of the TCU family.”

Since Mazey’s arrival in 2007, the Frogs have continuously progressed. In each of his previous four seasons, the Frogs have tallied 40 or more wins, been to four NCAA Regionals, including hosting two, two NCAA Super Regionals and one College World Series.

The Frogs are 186-65 during his tenure and have claimed seven conference championships (four regular season and three conference tournament titles). Ten pitchers have been drafted in the last four years, three of which have already made their Major League debuts (Andrew Cashner, Chicago Cubs; Jake Arrieta, Baltimore Orioles; Sam Demel, Arizona Diamondbacks).

Under Mazey’s tutelage in 2010, the Horned Frog pitching staff had one of the best seasons in school history. In addition to setting new school records in innings pitched (607 2/3) and strikeouts (553), the staff produced two All-Americans in Steven Maxwell and Matt Purke.

The group made a splash on the national level as Purke was named Baseball America’s Freshman of the Year. He was also tabbed as the consensus National Freshman Pitcher of the Year by numerous publications. Purke led the nation in victories with 16, while Kyle Winklerranked fifth (12) and Maxwell ranked 13th (11). The staff produced the ninth-best ERA in the nation at 3.55 and ranked ninth in hits allowed per game (8.52).

Four members of the pitching staff earned all-conference accolades in 2010. Maxwell was tabbed the MWC Pitcher of the Year, while he, Purke and Tyler Lockwood were each named first-team all-conference. Winkler was selected as a second-team all-conference performer.

In his first season at TCU, Mazey helped the Frogs to a league-best 484 strikeouts in 2007 as well as guiding them to a 3.95 ERA, the lowest for a Horned Frog squad since the 1981 season. Four members of the pitching staff were named all-conference.

His second campaign with the Frogs produced an even better pitching staff. The Frogs finished the campaign with a 3.63 ERA, which ranked fifth in Division I. Mazey also mentored the program’s second first-round draft pick in Cashner. Three members of the staff earned all-conference accolades. Sean Hoelscher and Trent Appleby earned Freshman All-American honors, while Cashner was tabbed a second-team All-American.

2009 brought the addition of four new pitchers, who under his tutelage, posted a 4.24 ERA, a mark that ranked 18th in the NCAA. Two Frogs earned all-conference honors in Taylor Cragin and Appleby.
