UTSA’s Sherman Corbett goes to bat for Local Charities

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head baseball coach Sherman Corbett took part in the Wounded Heroes Baseball Classic at Wolff Stadium on Sept. 4, which helped raise money for the Hope4Heroes organization.

Corbett, who joined forces with the likes of Gaylord Perry, Rollie Fingers and Jeff Kent, competed for the Legends squad, which was made up of members of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA). The opposite dugout featured the Heroes team, a squad made up of military veterans who were injured while in active duty.

“All members of the military team could play,” Corbett said. “Three players on the team were from the military all-star team.”

Corbett, who played in his first game since retiring from professional baseball in 1993, batted third and played right field for the Legends.

“If you’re keeping stats, I went 3-for-4,” he quipped.

Fans in attendance had full accessibility to the players and were treated to a postgame fireworks show.

“It was a great event to be involved with,” Corbett said. “I hope it continues to grow in the future.”

In his 11 seasons at UTSA, Corbett has made the Roadrunners baseball program an active fixture within the community. Corbett expects the program to continue working with Hope4Heroes in the future.

Hope4Heroes started in San Antonio and the non-profit organization has partnered with the MLBPAA with plans of similar games in other cities across the country. Founded by military veteran Vic Luekber, Hope4Heroes supports disabled veterans and families who suffer from post traumatic stress disorder, depression, traumatic brain injury, loss of limbs, severe burns and other injuries.
