Southern Miss releases 2011 Schedule

SouthernMissBaseball HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss head coach Scott Berry announced today the schedule for the 2011 baseball season, featuring 30 games at Pete Taylor Park.

“I think we have a very challenging schedule in front of us for the 2011 season,” Berry said. “The strength of our conference plus the non-conference games we have scheduled makes this a very attractive schedule for both our fans and players.”

The schedule features games against seven teams that participated in a NCAA Regional last season, including UCONN who hosted a regional and Alabama who advanced to the Super Regionals. The other regional teams on the schedule include: Louisiana Lafayette, College of Charleston, Ole Miss, LSU and Rice.

New this season over previous years will be the game times. Most midweek and Friday games will begin at 6:00 p.m. in 2011 and most Saturday games will be a 2:00 first pitch.

The Golden Eagles kick off their 2011 campaign on February 18 as they open a five game homestand including three game series with Eastern Illinois and midweek contest against La. Monroe and Alcorn State.

Southern Miss will hit the road for the first time on February 25th as they travel to Troy for a three game weekend set then to Tuscaloosa on March 2 to face the University of Alabama.

The Golden Eagles return to Pete Taylor Park on March 4 for an eight game homestand, the longest of the season. The homestand starts with a three game series against Louisiana Lafayette and midweek contest with South Alabama and Alabama A&M before a weekend series with Missouri State closes out the slate.

The black and gold will hit the road for five games beginning in Natchotoches, La. for a midweek tilt at Northwestern State before heading to Charleston, SC to participate in one of the top tournaments in the nation March 18-20. The three day tournament, hosted by the College of Charleston, will feature UCONN, Rhode Island and the College of Charleston with the Golden Eagles playing all three teams over the weekend. Before returning to “The Pete” Southern Miss will travel to La. Monroe for a midweek game on March 22.

March 25th opens Conference USA play and Southern Miss will put their five game winning streak over Tulane on the line to open league play, followed by a midweek game against Ole Miss at Pete Taylor Park on March 30.

C-USA play continues as the Eagles travel to Central Florida the weekend of April 1 and then face Mississippi State at Trustmark Park on April 5 before traveling to Memphis for a three game C-USA set beginning on April 8. The eight game road trip ends with a midweek tilt with Ole Miss at Trustmark Park on April 12.

The Eagles non-conference weekend series will be April 15th as UNO travels to “The Pete” and Southern Miss will once again participate in the Wally Pontiff Classic vs. LSU at Zephyr stadium on April 20.

The black and gold returns to C-USA play over Easter weekend as they host Marshall for a three game set, including a double header on Saturday. On Tuesday, April 26 Alabama will visit Pete Taylor Park to wrap up five straight midweek games vs. a team from the Southeastern Conference.

The road games continue as Southern Miss heads to East Carolina for a three game set the weekend of April 29 and a midweek game at South Alabama on May 3.

UAB comes to Pete Taylor Park on May 6 for a three game set and the Eagles travel to Houston for a three game series with the Cougars on May 13.

The regular season will conclude with a home series vs. Rice beginning on Thursday, May 19.

The 2011 Conference USA Tournament will be held at Trustmark Park in Jackson, Miss. this season and will begin on May 25.
