CalBaseball The San Francisco Chronicle obtained a 15 page report which stated that Cal-Berkley’s Athletic Department needed to cut between $10-13 million from the annual deficit. The Chancellor’s Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics at Berkeley, composed of four members of the Berkeley faculty and four prominent alumni did a study of the deficit and came to an interesting decision. They stated that five to seven teams from the current offering of 27 teams should be eliminated. The only “safe” sports are football, men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball which are all required for membership in the Pac-10.

Is Cal Baseball safe? I don’t know but Cal right now is in an interesting position with the funding issues going on throughout universities around the nation. A Cal coach who didn’t want to be identified stated to the Chronicle: “It’s not a great time at the university at the moment, but we’ll work our way through it.”

I would doubt that Cal Baseball ends up on the cutting board but you never know what these committees are thinking now. Do you think the school ends up cutting baseball or something else?
