Seth Thibodeaux Named New Head Coach of Nicholls Baseball

SethThibodeauxNichollsState THIBODAUX – Nicholls State University Athletics Director Rob Bernardi announced the selection of Seth Thibodeaux as the Colonels new head baseball coach. Thibodeaux, who replaces former head coach Chip Durham, was the associate head coach under Durham and has been with the Colonels
for the past three years. The hiring is pending the approval of the University of Louisiana Systems Board.

LSU in need of Pitching for 2011

LSUSECChampionshipPhoto The LSU pitching staff has been hammered with injuries, transfers, and players signing with MLB teams. The Tigers have lost three pitchers to Tommy John surgery this summer with Jordan Rittiner and Joey Bourgeois will miss next season after undergoing Tommy John surgery this summer. There is an outside chance Left-hander Chris Garrett will be back in April according to a Paul Mainieri in a report from The Times-Picayune. (Link) Both LHP Chris Matulis and RHP Mitch Moorman have decided to transfer. Matulis will join former LSU assistant Terry Rooney at Central Florida while Mitch Moorman will head to Wichita State to play under legendary head coach Gene Stephenson.

Cotuit takes Game 1 of Cape Cod Baseball League Championship Series

MattAndrieseCalRiverside SOUTH YARMOUTH —- The Cotuit Kettleers rode the arm of Matt Andriese (Cal Riverside) to a 3-0 win over Yarmouth-Dennis on Wednesday in Game 1 of the best-of-three Cape Cod Baseball League Championship Series at Red Wilson Field.

Andriese pitched a complete-game shutout to put his team one win away from the title. The series switches to Lowell Park for Thursday’s Game 2.

Live Video of Cape Cod Baseball League Championship Series

The Cotuit Kettleers and Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox will be starting the Cape Cod Baseball League Championship Series at 3pm today. The game will be broadcasted on WBZ.com with Scott Wahle doing Play by Play and John Garner doing color. Randy Fontanez (South Florida) has been named the starter for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox while Cotuit will send Matt Andriese (UC-Riverside) to the mound.

Boston College’s Matt Watson named New England Pro Prospect Award Winner

WatsonCCBL SOUTH YARMOUTH —- For the second straight year, the John Claffey New England Top Prospect Award belongs to a Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox player.

This year, the honor went to Matt Watson (Boston College) of Portland, Maine. Primarily a catcher, he also spent time at first base, designated hitter and in the outfield. The award was won last year by Watson’s BC teammate, Mickey Wiswall.

Clint Moore wins Cape League 10th Player Award

HARWICH – Credit his gritty, instinctual play, to being the player his teammates could count on in a tough situation, or to his military training, but Clint Moore (Army) was a logical choice to receive this year’s Manny Robello 10th Player award.

The award is presented each year to the player who has done more than the team has asked. As Commissioner Paul Galop noted while presenting the award, even Manny Robello, a longtime volunteer with the Cotuit Kettleers and the Cape League, would be hard-pressed to find a better candidate for the honor.

Umpire Michael Sadowski named Curly Clement Award Recipient

SadowskiCCBL It’s been quite a summer for Michael Sadowski. He umpired behind home plate at the Cape League All-Star Game at Fenway Park and last week received the 7th annual Curly Clement Award, presented for officiating excellence and contributions over the years to umpiring in the Cape Cod Baseball League.

The Clement Award was presented to Sadowski last Friday during the first game of the CCBL East Division playoffs between Brewster and Yarmouth-Dennis by Paul Galop, CCBL Commissioner, Sol Yas, CCBL deputy commissioner and umpire-in-chief, and Nick Zibelli, president of the CBUAO.

Cotuit and Yarmouth-Dennis advance to CCBL Championship

The Cotuit Kettleers picked up a 3-1 victory over the Wareham Gatemen to advance to the CCBL Championship series. They got a strong pitching performance from Bobby Shore (Oklahoma) who pitched seven innings allowing only two hits, one run, four walks, and five strikeouts. Brooks Pinckard (Baylor) pitched the final two innings without allowing a baserunner to finish off the 3-1 victory.

North Shore Navigators edge Danbury 5-4 to win NECBL Title

NorthShoreChampionshipPhoto LYNN – After 42 regular season games and an additional nine playoff contests, the North Shore Navigators battled their way to a second place finish in the division, defeated the defending champion Newport Gulls in the playoffs, and in the end won their first ever NECBL championship after they prevailed in an unforgettable 5-4 win in the NECBL finals last night at Fraser Field.

Matt Curtis named Head Coach at Cal-State Northridge

MattCurtisCalStateNorthridge NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Matt Curtis, who for the last ten years has been a major contributor in one of the West Coast’s most successful college programs, has been hired as head baseball coach at Cal State Northridge. Curtis comes to CSUN from Fresno State where he served as assistant coach, a program that has won five consecutive Western Athletic Conference titles, made four NCAA tournament appearances in the last five years, and won the 2008 College World Series.
