Ash Lawson added to Tennessee’s Coaching Staff

AshLawsonTenn KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee baseball team has hired San Diego Padres Regional Crosschecker Ash Lawson as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, Head Coach Todd Raleigh announced Friday. Lawson will replace Bradley LeCroy who resigned earlier this week to pursue another coaching opportunity.

"While I am disappointed to see Bradley leave, I am extremely excited about adding Ash Lawson to our staff," Raleigh said. "Coach LeCroy did an absolutely fantastic job while he was here and I truly believe that Ash will step right in and continue to move our program forward. His resume both at the college level and the professional level with the Padres speaks for itself and, as a Tennessean, he certainly understands the unique responsibilities and expectations that come with working at the University of Tennessee."

Mizzou Baseball Coaching Staff Adds Two

Jackson will take over as Missouri’s recruiting coordinator along with other coaching responsibilities, while Hobbs will handle the duties of pitching coach.

Cotuit wins 2010 Cape Cod Baseball League Title

KettleersCotuit The Cotuit Kettleers won the 2010 Cape Cod Baseball League title by grabbing a 6-0 victory over Yarmouth-Dennis to win Game 3 of the CCBL Championship Series.  Brady Rodgers (Arizona State) started for the Kettleers going on 2.1 innings while giving up three hits and two walks but let up zero runs before being lifted for Nick Tropeano (Stony Brook). Tropeano would pitch the rest of the game for the Kettleers without giving up a hit while walking three batters to pick up the win.

Pittsburgh adds Two Assistant Coaches

NewPittBaseball PITTSBURGH ? University of Pittsburgh head baseball coach Joe Jordano has announced the hiring of Tom Lipari as the Panthers? new pitching coach and Kyle Cheesebrough as a volunteer assistant for the upcoming 2011 season.

Lipari comes to Pitt after having most recently served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Youngstown State University for the past three seasons. Lipari fills the void left by former pitching coach Brandon Rowan who departed Pitt for the top assistant job at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock.

Tim LaVigne named Pitching Coach at Old Dominion

TimLaVigneODU NORFOLK, VA–Old Dominion University baseball coach Nate Goulet announced that former professional pitcher Tim LaVigne (Virginia Beach, Va.) has been named an assistant coach and will be working with the pitchers.

Since leaving professional baseball, LaVigne has volunteered at three Virginia Beach High Schools, coaching pitchers and providing help with mechanics and mental approach.

Yarmouth-Dennis evens Cape League Championship Series with 2-1 win

JohnLeonardYD COTUIT —- The Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox took a 2-1 victory from the Cotuit Kettleers on Thursday in Game 2 of the Cape Cod Baseball League Championship Series to stay alive for another day.

“We didn’t know what would happen,” Y-D field manager Scott Pickler said. “That was our goal, just to score the first run. That’s a very good team in the other dugout.”

Louisville’s Tony Zych named Top Reliever and Pro Prospect in CCBL

ZychTopProspectAward BOURNE— Right-handed pitcher Tony Zych (Louisville) was Bourne’s go-to closer all season, and last week he was recognized for his performance.

Zych was presented the Russ Ford Award as the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Outstanding Relief Pitcher and also earned the Robert A. McNeece Award as the Outstanding Pro Prospect, two of the most prestigious honors the league has to offer. The sophomore allowed only two runs in 20.1 innings this summer for a 0.89 ERA, recording 12 saves, while striking out 29 and walking just four. He pitched a shutout inning at the Cape League All-Star game.

USC’s Tom House Helps Make A Florida High Schooler’s Wish Come True

houseandthompson A quest for “perfect mechanics” led Flanagan High School junior right handed pitcher David Thompson to Tom House and the University of Southern California’s Rod Dedeaux Research and Baseball Institute last week. As a part of the Make-a-Wish program, Thompson, who suffers from common variable immunodeficiency, was granted the opportunity to work with House and use the state-of-the-art facilities available at USC.

Not that Thompson necessarily needs the assistance – his Flanagan High School team won the Florida 6-A championship this past spring and were named the best high school team in the country by Baseball America. Thompson was part of the pitching rotation for the Falcons until a bone bruise and his immunodeficiency sidelined him. His immunodeficiency compromises his ability to fight basic disease, like the common cold.

Kolten Wong named 2010 Cape Cod League MVP

ORLEANS —- You never quite know what result a big decision can have. For Kolten Wong (Hawai’i), the decision to forgo Team USA to play with the Orleans Firebirds this summer resulted in the MVP trophy.

Despite missing the last four games of the regular season due to an injury, Wong was honored with the Pat Sorenti Most Valuable Player Award.
