Team USA defeats Japan to advance to FISU Championship Game

GeorgeSpringerUConn Tokyo, Japan – Sonny Gray (Vanderbilt) scattered three hits over seven innings and George Springer (Connecticut) hit a grand slam as USA defeated host team Japan 4-2 in semi-final action at the V FISU World University Baseball Championships inside Yokohama Stadium Thursday night. With the win, USA (16-2) will make its fourth-straight appearance in the FISU gold medal game when they square off against Cuba on Saturday, Aug. 7 at 5 a.m. (EST).

NECBL Playoffs Recap for August 4th

The final games of the opening round of the NECBL Playoffs took place on Wednesday night with North Shore holding off a late Sanford rally to win their series two games to one. Danbury used a great start from Sean Hagan to defeat the Danbury Westerners 2-0 while the North Adams SteepleCats outhit the Keene Swamp Bats 10-5. North Shore Navigators will take on Newport in the Eastern Division final while North Adams will play the Danbury Westerners.

Cal Ripken League All-Stars Defeat University of Puerto Rico 3-2

Carl Iwaski to be named Head Coach at Northern Colorado

NorthernColoradoGREELEY, Colo. – Jon Bon Jovi and Jennifer Nettles sang the lyrics “Who says you can’t go back?” and Carl Iwasaki is putting the song to the test.

Iwasaki (pronounced Ee-wah-sah-key), who has spent the last six years as the head coach at Austin College, has been named Northern Colorado’s ninth baseball coach.

FDU names Gary Puccio Head Baseball Coach

FDUBaseball Fairleigh Dickinson University Director of Athletics David Langford announced the hiring of Gary Puccio as Head Baseball Coach, released on Wednesday, August 4.    Puccio has been named Coach of the Year six times in his career and has coached over 500 games at the collegiate level.

Cal-Ripken All-Stars take Game 1, 5-2 in Puerto Rico

Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League Logo The CRCBL won their opener in Puerto Rico, 5-2, over host Caguas-Guaynabo on Tuesday evening in the first of four exhibition games against Puerto Rican amateur teams.

After falling behind early, 2-0, the Ripken Leaguers got a double from Matt Marquis (University of Maryland/Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts) in the fourth inning and a painful RBI-hit-by-pitch from Cory Jensen (Florida Southern University/Baltimore Redbirds). Meanwhile, starter Cameron Love (University of San Francisco/Bethesda Big Train) struck out ten batters in four innings before giving way to Dustin Herbert (Salisbury University/Southern Maryland Nationals), who struck out seven more in four innings of his own.

NECBL Playoffs Recap for August 3rd

The second day of the NECBL playoffs took place on Tuesday August 3rd with only one series being completed while the other three series will go to a winner take all game 3 on Wednesday night. The Newport Gulls completed the sweep to advance to the NECBL Eastern Division Final with a 3-0 victory over the Laconia Muskrats. They will face the winner of the Sanford Mainers and North Shore Navigators series on Thursday evening in Newport. Sanford forced a deciding Game 3 on Tuesday with a 5-1 victory over North Shore. The Danbury Westerners picked up a 5-3 victory over the Bristol Collegiate Baseball Club while North Adams Steeple Cats picked up a 6-4 victory over the Keene Swamp Bats.

Long Beach State announces 2011 Schedule

Arizona Diamondbacks pull offer from Barret Loux

loux_thumb1 According to Jeff Passan over at Yahoo! Sports, the Arizona Diamondbacks have decided to pull their offer to the sixth overall selection in the 2010 MLB Draft, Barret Loux. The junior lefty from Texas A&M failed a physical in July, preventing the Diamondbacks from signing him. Arizona will now accept the seventh overall pick in 2011 in exchange for not signing Loux, a condition of the MLB draft compensation rule.

The Diamondbacks don’t suffer much damage in this deal. Sure they don’t get their first rounder, but they receive two in 2011. Loux, on the other hand, has a slew of tough decisions in front of him.

Leesburg and Winter Park set to face off in Florida League Championship

FCSLLogo After two relatively quick playoff series, the #3 seed Leesburg Lightning will meet the #1 Winter Park Diamond Dawgs for the 2010 Florida League Championship at Tropicana Field. The Lightning will be returning to the game for the third time in the past four years, winning the championship in 2007 as well as last season, 2009.  For the Diamond Dawgs, this is the first time they will be back since 2006 when they won it all.  The Dawgs have had an amazing turnaround after winning only ten games all of last season and are currently ranked 20th in the nation across all summer leagues according to PG Crosschecker.  The game will begin after the 12:10 PM game between the Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays, with 5:00 PM as an estimated start time.
