AnthonyRendonRice The Seattle Mariners fans are already looking forward to the 2011 MLB Draft as they are currently one game behind the Pittsburgh Pirates in the loss column and 5.5 games behind Baltimore for the worst record in the league. Larry Stone of the Seattle Times recently took a look at some of the best prospects for the 2011 MLB Draft and the consensus a couple of weeks ago was that Rice third baseman Anthony Rendon was the clear cut number 1 pick. (Full Player Profile on Rendon available here) Rendon went down injured on July 14th with multiple fractures in his right ankle which was his second straight year of having a major right ankle injury.

AnthonyRendonInjury Both Jim Callis of Baseball America and Keith Law are both saying that teams could be scared away from Rendon with his recent ankle injuries. I personally spoke with a national scout at the 2010 Cape Cod All-Star Game that he would rank UConn’s George Springer just slightly behind Rendon right now. The other names mentioned in the article are UCLA RHP Gerrit Cole, Texas RHP Taylor Jungmann, TCU LHP Matt Purke, Vanderbilt RHP Sonny Gray, South Carolina OF Jackie Bradley Jr., and UConn RHP Matt Barnes.

We get so excited about the draft…. Our number ones go no where except via trade for nothing in return.

Then they seem to excel. What is it about the Mariners. Good pitchers (Cliff Lee was an exception so we
traded him and paid a big part of his salary while he is with the Rangers) seem to forget how to pitch when
they come to or up to the Major league level. The hitters forget how to hit….. I don't understand it.

I love UConn's George Springer in next year's draft. Much better all-around player then Jackie Bradley Jr.
