2010 Team USA Collegiate National Team Roster Announced

CARY, N.C. — USA Baseball announced Sunday night the 22 members of its 2010 Collegiate National Team. The roster is headlined by pitchers Gerrit Cole (UCLA), Sonny Gray (Vanderbilt) and infielder Brad Miller (Clemson), who were all members of the 2009 National Team.

This year’s squad consists of five infielders, four outfielders, two catchers, nine pitchers and a pair of two-way players. The Collegiate National Team was selected after seven days of trials that included six intra-squad games and practices as the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. Team USA is comprised of the top non-draft-eligible college players in the United States.

CARY, N.C. — Matt Jensen’s (Cal Poly) grand slam in the top of the sixth inning lifted the Red team to a 5-3 win over the Blue squad in Game 6 of the Collegiate National Team (CNT) Trials Sunday afternoon at the National Training Complex (NTC). With the win Red improved to 3-1-2, while Blue dropped to 2-1-3.

Jesse Zepeda added to Long Beach Staff

Long Beach, Calif. – Long Beach State head baseball coach Troy Buckley has announced the addition of Jesse Zepeda as an assistant coach for the program. Zepeda comes to The Beach after spending seven seasons as an assistant coach at Cal Poly.

Zepeda, who was the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Cal Poly, will assume those same roles for Long Beach State.

Cape Cod League Top Performers for July 10th

Team USA Collegiate National Team Trials: Game 5 Recap

Cary, N.C. — Brad Miller (Clemson), Austin Nola (LSU) and Anthony Rendon (Rice) each collected two hits to help the Blue team to a 5-3 win over the Red squad Saturday afternoon in Game 5 of the Collegiate National Team (CNT) Trials at the National Training Center (NTC).

With the game knotted up at three in the bottom of the seventh, Nola laced a single through the left side with one out scoring Steve Rodriguez (UCLA) putting Blue (2-1-2) up 4-3. Rodriguez, who was 0-for-2 with two runs, drew his second walk of the afternoon to start the frame then moved into scoring position after swiping second base setting up Nola’s game-winning hit. Miller followed with a single through the left side and Rendon reached on an error that scored Nola for the games final run and giving Blue a 5-3 victory.

2010 AFLAC All-American Game Rosters Released

SAN DIEGO – July 7, 2010 – Today marks the release of the full 38-player roster for the 2010 Aflac All-American Baseball Classic. The nation’s top high school baseball players will descend upon San Diego to play in the eighth annual baseball showcase, featuring an East versus West matchup of the nation’s top high school players. The 2010 game will be played Aug. 15 at 5 p.m. PDT in PETCO Park, home of the San Diego Padres, and will be nationally televised live on FOX Sports Net.

Andre “The Hawk” Dawson, eight-time MLB Gold Glove outfielder and four-time MLB Silver Slugger, will serve as honorary chairman for the 2010 showcase. Dawson will be inducted into the MLB Baseball Hall of Fame on July 25, 2010.

CARY, N.C. — Kyle Winkler (Texas Christian), Madison Boer (Oregon) and Nick Ramirez (Cal State Fullerton) combined to throw a one-hitter as the Red team took Game 4 of the Collegiate National Team (CNT) Trials in easy fashion Friday night 7-1 at the National Training Complex (NTC).

With the win the Red team improves to 2-1-1, while the Blue team drops to 1-1-2.

The Red trio of hurlers fanned seven batters while walking just two during the 7 1/2 inning affair. Winkler picked up the win after tossing three perfect innings with three punch outs, while Boer fanned three over two innings of hitless work.

Nebraska adds Darin Erstad to Coaching Staff

Lincoln – One of the most decorated baseball players in program history returns to Nebraska in a new role, as Darin Erstad has been named an assistant coach for the Husker baseball team, Head Coach Mike Anderson announced Thursday. A two-time Major League All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner, Erstad will serve as the Huskers’ hitting coach.
