Winthrop’s Joe Hudak relieved as Head Coach

JoeHudakWinthrop ROCK HILL, SCWinthrop Athletic Director Tom Hickman announced on Thursday that head baseball coach Joe Hudak has been relieved of his coaching duties and will be reassigned within the athletic department under the direction of the athletic director.

“We felt we needed a change in leadership,” said Hickman. “We appreciate the years of service that Coach Hudak gave to this program and the efforts he made to build Winthrop baseball into a respected and competitive program on a regional and national level. However, the program has not progressed in recent years as we would have liked, particularly when you take into account the outstanding facilities and support services that we have to offer prospective student-athletes.”

USA Baseball Announces 2010 Collegiate National Team Trials Roster

USABaseballLogo DURHAM, N.C. — USA Baseball announced Thursday the 39 players who have been named to the 2010 Collegiate National Team Trials roster.  Trials are scheduled to be held July 6-11 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex (NTC) in Cary, N.C.

Of the 39 invitees, 36 will compete for a spot of the final 22-man roster, while three players were named as alternates.  Eleven of the players will be attending trials on the heels of helping their respective schools advance to the 2010 College World Series (CWS) in Omaha, Neb.

TCU’s Bryan Holaday Wins 2010 Johnny Bench Award

BryanHoladayTCU FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU senior catcher Bryan Holaday was named the 2010 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award recipient. The award is given to the top catcher in collegiate baseball. Holaday is the 11th player to win the award since its inception in 2000. It is the first major award won by a TCU baseball player in school history.

A first-team all-conference member, Holaday adds to his list of accolades, which also include second-team All-America honors. He is a three-time MWC Hitter of the Week winner and was also named MVP of both the Houston College Classic and the Mountain West Conference Tournament. He earned a spot on the 11-man College World Series all-tournament team.

Cape Cod League Top Performers for June 30th

JordanPriesStanford The story on June 30th was the complete game nine inning no-hitter by Stanford sophomore RHP Jordan Pries. He gave up only three base runners which all came on walks. He ended up tossing 107 pitches with 66 for strikes. Here are the rest of the top performers for the night.

Lewis-Clark State Coach Ed Cheff to retire

Ed Cheff Ed Cheff, who led the Lewis-Clark State College baseball team to an unprecedented 16 NAIA World Series title and is the NAIA’s all-time leader in victories at one school, announced Wednesday that he will be stepping down after 34 years at the Warrior helm.

The veteran coach will be replaced by Gary Picone, who will also keep his duties as athletic director, incoming LCSC interim president J. Anthony (Tony) Fernandez announced. Picone, however, will relinquish his duties as Tournament Director for the Avista NAIA World Series to LCSC assistant athletic director Brooke Cushman.

The changes officially begin on Sept. 1.

Cheff has been the face of the LCSC baseball program since his arrival in 1977. He posted a 1,705-430-2 record with LCSC for a .799 winning percentage. His win total ranks second only to Wichita State’s Gene Stephenson’s 1,724 wins with the same program in all of college baseball. His win total also is fourth all-time among all college baseball coaches.
