Baylor’s Logan Verrett is the Catch of the Day

Baylor RHP Logan Verrett was recently featured by the Chatham Anglers in their “Catch of the Day” daily feature. He discussed his seven no-hit innings from Friday night while demonstrating how he throws his pitches. He is currently 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 14 innings while only giving up three hits. Cape Cod Baseball League Top Performers for July 4th

Athletics Department Here is your Cape Cod League Recap for July 4th. The best performance at the plate came from Tyler Bream of Liberty who went 5-6 with a run scored and drove in six runs for the Wareham Gatemen in a 15-4 victory over the Bourne Braves. The pitching wasn’t fantastic tonight at all with Luke Bard and Jarred Hippen having the best nights.

Hayden Moss set to appear on Big Brother 12

HaydenMoss Former Arizona State outfielder Hayden Moss will be appearing on Big Brother 12 on CBS starting this week. Moss was a member of the Arizona State baseball team in 2008 when he appeared in seven games and went hitless in six at-bats. According to my archives, Moss was originally named academically ineligible on February 20th 2008 thus cutting his chances to appear down.

Cape Cod League Top Performers for July 3rd

GagnonLBSU Here is your Cape Cod Baseball League Recap for July 3rd. There was a blowout tonight at the Bourne Braves defeated Falmouth 17-3 as Tennessee’s Steven Gruver gave up 10 runs (five earned) and nine hits in only 2.1 innings. The best night at the plate was by Matt Newman from Arizona State as he went 3-4 with a double for the Orleans Firebirds. Andy Burns from Kentucky also had a solid night for Brewster as he went 2-2 with 3 RBI. There was no real outstanding performances on the mound with Andrew Gagnon from Long Beach State going seven innings, giving up five hits, and one run while striking out 8 as his Brewster Whitecaps defeated Orleans 6-2. 2011 MLB Draft Top Prospects by Fanhouse.com

The 2010 College Baseball season ended on Wednesday night so it is now time to turn the page and focus on the 2011 season. Fanhouse.com MLB Draft guru Frankie Piliere has put out his first 2011 MLB Draft Follow List. The list includes his top 50 players that he has seen that are eligible for the draft next season. This means that you will not see a couple of big names on the list like UCLA’s Gerrit Cole and Vanderbilt’s Sonny Gray to name a few. He plans on updating his rankings in the coming months as he seems more of these guys play. The listings today has high school LHP Daniel Norris as his top ranked player with UConn’s Matt Barnes in the runner up spot. Alex Dickerson from Indiana checks in at number 3 behind Barnes while Travis Harrison and George Springer are fourth and fifth respectively. The rest of the top ten is Brett Mooneyham from Stanford, Dylan Davis from Redmond WA, Phil Evan from LaCosta Canyon in California, Josh Tobias of SE Guilford High School in North Carolina, and Hudson Boyd is tenth out of South Fort Myers High School. A couple other names of interest is Jason Esposito of Vanderbilt checking in at 17th while Kolten Wong is at 49 on the countdown. You can check out the full list below.

Rice’s Anthony Rendon wins 2010 Dick Howser Award

DickHowserAwardPhoto LUBBOCK, Texas – Rice sophomore third baseman Anthony Rendon is the recipient of the 24th annual Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball’s player of the year. The presentation was made Friday evening in Lubbock, Texas as part of the festivities to recognize and induct the College Baseball Hall of Fame and the awarding of several other national honors for 2010.

Rendon is just the second player in Conference USA history to be named Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons. He picked up that honor again this year while leading the Owls to the regular season league championship and the school’s 16th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance. The two-time first team All-CUSA selection was named to the C-USA Championship All-Tournament team and was named the Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Austin Regional. The Houston native was also named the Male Athlete of the Year for all sports in Conference USA.

Cape Cod League Top Performers for July 2nd

Oklahoma State’s Mark Ginther had the best night at the plate grabbing two hits in two plate appearances while hitting a homer and scoring two runs. The pitching as always was excellent with Baylor’s RHP Logan Verrett tossing seven no-hit innings for Chatham. Full listing of top performers below with box scores.

Centenary’s Ed McCann Resigns; Mike Diaz named Replacement

EdMCannCentenary SHREVEPORT-After 12 successful seasons as the head baseball coach, Centenary’s Ed McCann announced his resignation as the leader of the Gents baseball program on Friday afternoon.

“Centenary took a chance on me 12 years ago when no one else would give me the time of day. I have had the opportunity to work under four awesome athletic directors: Russ Sharp, Dr. David Bedard, Taylor Moore, and Dr. Tom Tallach. For that, I will always be thankful and grateful,” said McCann.

McCann departs Centenary after completing his 12th year as the head coach of the Gents.

UALR Announces Coaching Changes

UALRNewCoaches LITTLE ROCK – UALR head baseball coach Scott Norwood announced changes to his staff on Friday, adding University of Pittsburgh assistant coach Brandon Rowan while promoting Jeremy Haworth to a full-time assistant position.

Rowan comes to UALR after two seasons as Pittsburgh’s pitching coach, where he helped the Panthers to a 38-18 record and a No. 3 seed in the Big East Tournament in 2010. He will serve as UALR’s pitching coach and recruiting coordinator, inheriting a staff which will look to replace 2010 MLB Draft pick and All-Sun Belt performer Adam Champion.

University of North Florida New Head Coach: Raymond “Smoke” Laval

SmokeLaval JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After 23 seasons, the University of North Florida baseball team is under new direction as Raymond “Smoke” Laval officially becomes the head coach of the Ospreys. Laval replaces Hall of Fame head baseball coach Dusty Rhodes, who announced his retirement in August effective at the end of the 2010 season.
