Team USA loses to Chinese Taipei 3-1

JackieBradleyJrSouthCarolina Taipei, Taiwan – Chinese Taipei used four hits in the sixth inning to score a pair of runs and walked away with a 3-1 over Team USA (9-1) Sunday night at Hsinchuang Field. With the win, Chinese Taipei snaps the Collegiate National Team’s win streak at nine games.

Trailing 1-0 heading to the bottom half of the sixth inning, Chinese Taipei pushed across a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. Hsien-Hsien Yang singled down the right field line with one out then took third on Chen-Yu Hung’s single to right. Yang crossed home to tie the game at one on an infield single by Haung before Chun-Chieh Wang singled to left, the fourth hit of the stanza, scoring Hung.

Tsung-Hsuan Tseng picked up the win after working five innings where he allowed one run (earned) on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts in the start. Chuan-Ji Liao (0 H, 1 K), Yu-Hsun Chen (1 H), Kuan-Han Lin (2 H) and Wen-Cheng Hsu (0 H, 1 K) combined to hold CNT scoreless over the final four innings.

Sean Gilmartin (Florida State) was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Sonny Gray (Vanderbilt) struck out seven, including the side in the fourth, and allowed three hits over four frames in the start before being lifted by Gilmartin (2-1). Kyle Winkler (Texas Christian) went 1 2/3 innings giving up a run on two hits.

USA struck first when Jackie Bradley, Jr. (South Carolina) singled home Drew Maggi (Arizona State) in the third inning. Maggi reached after being plunked by a pitch to start the frame then took second on Nolan Fontana’s (Florida) sac bunt before stealing his team-leading ninth base.

Bradley, Jr. collected three of Team USA’s six hits, while Fontana, Mikie Mahtook (LSU) and Brad Miller (Clemson) each added base hits. CNT’s pitching staff struck out 12 batters marking the fifth time this season they have reached double-digits.

Team USA and Chinese Taipei will continue the four-game international friendly series on Monday, July 26 with a 6:30 a.m. (EST) first pitch scheduled.
