Buddy Gouldsmith Joins Nevada Baseball Staff

GouldsmithNevada RENO, Nev. – After conducting a national search University of Nevada head baseball coach Gary Powers has hired former UNLV head coach Buddy Gouldsmith as an assistant coach for the Wolf Pack.  Gouldsmith will work with the outfielders, hitters and coach third base for the Pack.

“Buddy brings a tremendous amount of Division I experience to our staff,” said Powers.  “His recruiting ties and knowledge of our opponents we play will be great asset to our staff.”

In seven seasons directing the UNLV program from 2004-10 he posted a mark of 202-217 earning his 200th career victory this past season.  The 202 wins ranks second among Rebel baseball coaches.  He became just the fourth UNLV baseball coach to reach 100 wins and was the fastest to reach 100 victories.

 

He guided the 2004 and 2005 teams to Mountain West Conference Tournament titles and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.  Both seasons the Rebels had were aided by MWC Tournament MVP’s.  The 2004 Rebel squad also captured the regular-season MWC title.  Following the 2005 season he was named the MWC Coach of the Year after the Rebels went 23-7 in league play and 35-29 overall. 

During his time at UNLV he has produced 21 all-conference players, two players of the year and two All-Americans along with having 23 players selected in the Major League Baseball Draft.  He coached 2008 MWC Player of the Year Xavier Scruggs, who hit 20 home runs and drove in 65 as he also earned Louisville Slugger second-team All-America honors.  In 2004 Eric Nielsen was named the MWC Player of the Year after leading the Rebels to the regular season and tournament titles.

Not only producing on the field 93 times he placed a player on the MWC Academic team.

He spent two seasons on the UNLV staff as recruiting coordinator and hitting instructor prior to taking over as the head coach on June 9, 2003.  He helped the Rebels hit .324 as a team in 2002 and 2003 producing the MWC’s batting champion in his first season.

The Sacramento, Calif. native spent four years at Tulane University as the third base coach and hitting instructor prior to joining the UNLV staff.  He helped the Green Wave reach the school’s first-ever College World Series in 2001.

Before coaching at Tulane he was an assistant coach for five years at American River Junior College in Sacramento, California.  He also worked as an associate scout for the San Francisco Giants from 1994-97.  In 1992-93 he was an assistant coach at Cosumnes River College.

He received a bachelor’s degree from Sacramento State in business administration and a master’s in sport management from Chico State. 

Gouldsmith and his wife Heather, have two sons, Garrett (10) and Gunner (8) and a daughter Gabby (6).
