UCLA heads to the CWS with 8-1 win over Cal-State Fullerton

RobRasmussenUCLA LOS ANGELES – Left-hander Rob Rasmussen tossed a two-hit complete game in a decisive Game 3 of the NCAA Los Angeles Super Regional before 1,967 at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Sunday night, leading UCLA to an 8-1 victory over Cal State Fullerton and the program’s first berth in the College World Series since 1997.

Rasmussen (11-2) notched his team-leading 11th victory, striking out nine batters and issuing one walk. Rasmussen, who was selected in the second round of last week’s MLB Draft by the Florida Marlins (73rd overall), limited the Titans (46-18) to one run and two hits in his first career complete game.

Clemson hammers Alabama 19-5; Forces Game 3 on Monday

NCAA  Alabama Clemson Baseball Clemson, SC – Behind 20 hits along with a six-run first inning and a nine-run sixth inning, #13 Clemson defeated #16 Alabama 19-5 in front of 6,024 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in the Clemson Super Regional on Sunday night. The Tigers, who evened the series 1-1, improved to 42-23. The Crimson Tide dropped to 42-24.

The Tigers jumped all over the Crimson Tide with six runs in the first inning and never looked back. In all, the Tigers totaled 20 hits and were 10-for-18 with runners in scoring position. Alabama scored in five of the nine innings, but it could only muster one run in each of those five frames.

Oklahoma evens series with Virginia

OklahomaReine CHARLOTTESVILLE - Oklahoma topped Virginia 10-7 in Game 2 of the Charlottesville Super Regional on Sunday at Davenport Field to force a decisive Game 3 on Monday. The Cavaliers and Sooners will meet at 7 p.m. Monday for a trip to the College World Series in Omaha. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.

Oklahoma used three home runs, two by Cody Reine, to down Virginia and keep its season alive. Reine finished the day going 2-for-3 with five RBIs to lead the Sooners.

TCU defeats Texas 4-1; Advances to CWS

12 June 2010:  during the 2010 NCAA Baseball Super Regional at Austin featuring the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs and the University of Texas Longhorns at UT Disch-Falk Field in Austin, TX. AUSTIN, Texas–TCU earned the first College World Series appearance in school history Sunday with a 4-1 victory over No. 2 seed Texas in the final game of the best-of-three Super Regional.

Kyle Winkler pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory, allowing only five hits while striking out six.Tyler Lockwood, who broke the TCU record for career appearances with his 86th Sunday, pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to record the save.

Florida State edges Vanderbilt to advance to CWS

ShermanJohnsonFSU TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State is going back! For the 20th time in school history, the Seminoles are headed to Omaha. Twelfth-ranked Florida State (47-18) secured a spot in the College World Series with a 7-6 victory over No. 17 Vanderbilt (46-20) Sunday afternoon in front of a crowd of 4,225 on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium.

The Seminoles led throughout but had to hold off a relentless Commodore squad that scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run at first. But Mike McGee slammed the door shut striking out Joe Loftus for the final out of the game.

South Carolina advances to CWS with 10-9 victory over Coastal Carolina

ChristianWalkerSouthCarolina MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Christian Walker’s two-out three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted South Carolina to a 10-9 victory over Coastal Carolina sending the Gamecocks to the school’s ninth College World Series in Omaha, Neb. The Gamecocks are 48-15 on the year while Coastal ends its season with a 55-10 record. It was a tight Super Regional with both games decided by a run. This was South Carolina’s eighth NCAA Super Regional appearance in the last 11 years. The Gamecocks last reached Omaha in 2004.

Bryant University’s Jamie Pinzino Resigns

JamiePinzinoBryant According to a report in the Providence Journal, Bryant head baseball coach Jamie Pinzino has resigned after an alcohol related altercation on campus May 26. Pinzino is facing charges for simple assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Bryant assistant coach Andy Koocher was also charged him with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors. He pleaded no contest at his arraignment and his case was filed for one year.

Arizona State defeats Arkansas 7-6 in 12 innings

DevenMarrero TEMPE, Ariz. – Deven Marrero’s walkoff single in the 12th inning gave the No. 1 Arizona State University baseball team a dramatic 7-6 victory over Arkansas in Game One of the Tempe Super Regional. A sellout crowd of 4,371 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark saw the Sun Devils move ahead 1-0 in the best-of-three series and improve to 51-8 overall on the season.

With runners on first and third and one out, Marrero hit the first pitch he saw from Arkansas reliever Brett Eibner into center field to drive in Kole Calhoun for the winning score.

UCLA rallies past Cal-State Fullerton

RahmatullaUCLA LOS ANGELES – The UCLA baseball team overcame a 6-5 deficit with two outs in the ninth inning, using a two-run, two-out homer from Tyler Rahmatulla, before scoring four runs in the top of the 10th to defeat Cal State Fullerton, 11-7, and force a decisive Game 3 in a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional series on Saturday night.

Saturday’s win at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium marked the Bruins’ first-ever NCAA Super Regional victory (Super Regional format began in 1999). The winner of Sunday night’s 7 p.m. contest earns a trip to the eight-team field at the 2010 College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

Florida capitalizes on Miami errors to advance to CWS

FloridaPigPile Freshman Austin Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla.) delivered a two-out RBI double in the top of the 10th inning to drive in freshman Nolan Fontana (Winter Garden, Fla.) with what proved to be the winning run as No. 4 Florida (47-15) upended No. 11 Miami (Fla.) (43-20), 4-3, in front of a school-record crowd of 5,783 fans on Saturday night at McKethan Stadium. The victory in Game 2 of the NCAA Gainesville Super Regional secured the Gators’ sixth trip to the College World Series, first since 2005, for what will be the final event at Rosenblatt Stadium.

Alabama grabs a tight 5-4 victory over Clemson

BamaPhoto CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 16 Alabama baseball team scored four runs in the second inning and then rode the clutch pitching of junior right-hander Jimmy Nelson, senior left-hander Jonathan Smart and senior right-hander Jake Smith to a 5-4 win over No. 13 Clemson in game one of the 2010 NCAA Super Regional in front of a jam-packed crowd of 6,346 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Saturday night.

Alabama (42-23) has won 13 of its last 15 games, including a four-game winning streak, and moved to within one win of its first College World Series appearance since 1999 with the one-run win over the Tigers.

Homers carry UVA to 3-2 win over Oklahoma

GrovattUVA CHARLOTTESVILLE - The Virginia took Game 1 of its NCAA Super Regional series with Oklahoma, winning 3-2 on Saturday at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers used a pair of home runs and a strong outing from ace Danny Hultzen to take the lead in the series.

All of Virginia’s runs came from the long ball, with Phil Gosselin hitting a solo homer and Dan Grovatt adding a two-run homer. Gosselin, who was 2-for-4 on the day, led the Cavalier offense.

Hultzen improved to 11-1 on the season with the win. He pitched eight innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Kevin Arico pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his 18th save of the season.
