Cape Cod Baseball League Players of the Week

COCA COLA PITCHER OF THE WEEK

MarkPope Mark Pope, Falmouth RHP

The first pitcher to secure the Coca Cola Pitcher of the Week award is Falmouth’s Mark Pope (Georgia Tech). Pope was lights out in his first appearance, his only to date. In a 1-0 victory over Cotuit, the righty fanned 11 Kettleers over seven shutout innings, surrendering only two hits. The 11 strikeouts recorded by Pope have been matched by only three other pitchers over the first week of games.

A bright future lies ahead for the Georgia Tech sophomore. As a freshman, Pope was the Yellow Jackets’ closer, recording 18 scoreless innings in 25 appearances, good for a 5-1 record and eight saves for the season. In 2010 as a starter, the versatile Pope went 8-1, ending the season with both a complete game and a save. He was selected in the 18th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, but elected to attend Georgia Tech instead.

CWS Game 3 Report: South Carolina vs. Oklahoma

Rain caused the start of Day 2 of the College World Series to be delayed 4 hours and 15 minutes, the Gamecocks and Sooners ended up taking the field at 5:25.  In the top of the first inning, the Gamecocks would get an early threat as Whit Merrifield getting a four pitch 1 out walk which was followed by a single by Jackie Bradley that put runners on the corners, Michael Rocha was bailed out early by his catcher Tyler Ogle, who backpicked Bradley off of first base, and then followed that up by striking out Adrian Morales.

The State of College Baseball: Leaders applaud growth, recognize scholarship concerns

Rosenblattlogo On the eve of the final College World Series in Rosenblatt Stadium, college baseball’s leaders looked back at the growth of the sport and the “personal” nature that allowed the sport to get to such a point.

Dennis Poppe, the NCAA vice president for baseball and football, Tim Weiser, chair of the Division I baseball committee, and Dave Keilitz, executive director of the American Baseball Coaches Association, addressed a wide variety of topics with the media on Friday afternoon, ranging from the critical (the lack of #1 seeds who made it to Omaha) to the sentimental (thoughts on the last CWS at Rosenblatt.) Josh Spence Returns to Action in the Cape Cod League

JoshSpenceASU Josh Spence pitched well tonight in 2 innings of work for the Cotuit Kettleers, giving up one unearned run while surrendering three hits and striking out five batters. Spence earned a no-decision for the effort against the Chatham Anglers. The possibility of Spence taking a medical redshirt was floated out there by Jeff Metcalfe of the Arizona Republic, but it looks like with tonight’s appearance, Josh is leaning towards signing with the Padres. If tonight’s work wasn’t evidence enough, Spence was quoted in the Geelong Advertiser as saying:

“I’ll just get healthy and try and pursue that opportunity out there and then hopefully everything works out with the Padres and I’ll be wearing a Padres uniform in a short time.”

Sounds like he’s going to be working out the nerve issue in his elbow as he pitches and could reunite with Pat Murphy back in San Diego, that is if Murphy doesn’t get a job coaching elsewhere.

CWS Game 2 Report: UCLA vs Florida

The UCLA Bruins battled the Florida Gators in the second game of the College World Series. UCLA entered the game with a 48-14 record while Florida was 47-16. The Bruins would jump on Florida starting pitcher Alex Panteliodis in the first inning with Dean Espy driving in Niko Gallego from third. The inning could have been bigger if UCLA would have executed a safety squeeze as Cody Regis bunted the ball right back to Panteliodis and Beau Amaral was thrown out as he broke to the plate. Florida would get out of the inning by striking out Chris Giovinazzo.

Florida would get into the act right away in the bottom of the first inning by getting a two out two run RBI single by Brian Johnson through the shortstop and third baseman hole to give the Gators the early 2-1 lead.  The inning could have been bigger if a Mike Zunino line drive wasn’t caught by Beau Amaral who made a diving catch to his right for the final out of the inning.

CWS Game 1 Report: Florida State vs TCU

The one question I had coming into today was whether the pressure of playing at Rosenblatt Stadium for the first time in school history would affect the TCU Horned Frogs. The early answer on Saturday was yes after a Jantzen White error in the top of the first inning cost them a run but the Horned Frogs bounced right back in the bottom of the first inning with a five huge runs. Jason Coats had an important hit in the inning two run double down the left field line to give the Horned Frogs the 2-1 lead before they tacked on three more runs in the frame.
