South Carolina wins Game 1 of CWS Championship Series 7-1 over UCLA

The South Carolina Gamecocks picked up a 7-1 victory over the UCLA Bruins behind a strong pitching performance from junior RHP Blake Cooper. He went eight innings allowing three hits and one run while striking out 10 batters with one walk.

The Gamecocks jumped on UCLA ace Gerrit Cole for two runs in the first inning with three hits and taking advantage of a Cody Regis error to give the Gamecocks the early 2-0 lead. They would add a single run in the top of the second inning on a Evan Marzilli RBI single to give South Carolina the 3-0 lead.

Clemson’s Kyle Parker Not Ready To Make Decision On Future Yet

With his team eliminated from the postseason by in-state rival South Carolina this past weekend, Clemson junior right-fielder Kyle Parker has a decision to make:  Return to campus and re-join the football team where he is the starting quarterback or put down his football helmet and focus solely on baseball.  Parker was selected in the first round of this year’s MLB draft, picked 26th overall by the Colorado Rockies.

According to a report in The Greenville News Parker won’t make a decision for at least a month telling the paper he plans on going on vacation before making the decision.  “I’ve been going for about 1½ years straight with no break,” he said. “No matter what I’m going to do, I’m definitely taking probably a month or so off just to rest my body.”

Cape Cod Baseball League Players of the Week (June 28th)

Anthony Ranaudo, Brewster RHP
Brewster flamethrower Anthony Ranaudo (LSU) has been named Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week after posting 10.2 shutout innings over two appearances.

In his first start, a no-decision against Bourne, the 6-7 Ranaudo surrendered one hit over four innings. His second appearance was even more impressive. In a win over Wareham, he again surrendered only one hit, this time striking out eight Gatemen over 6.2 innings.

UConn’s Matt Barnes Impresses

MattBarnesUConn Frankie Piliere, National MLB Anaylst for Fanhouse.com recently had the chance to attend the pitching showdown on Saturday night between LSU’s Anthony Ranaudo and UConn’s Matt Barnes. Frankie thought that Anthony Ranaudo would be the story as he was selected by the Boston Red Sox with the 39th overall selection. He ended up going 6.2 innings allowing only one hit and striking out eight batters. He is down the cape to raise his signing bonus with the Red Sox as he is looking for Top 10 money as he entered the 2010 College Baseball season as our top ranked player in the country before coming down with some injuries. Bayler Teal an inspiration for South Carolina

South Carolina Gamecocks logo South Carolina has dedicated their College World Series run to Bayler Teal, a 7-year old from Bishopsville who had been battling a rare form of cancer called Neuroblastoma. Teal lost his battle on Thursday night, and the Gamecocks are now regrettably now playing in his memory. Michael Roth, who hadn’t started a game all season, threw a complete game on Friday night against Clemson to survive another day, and was interviewed by ESPN postgame and spoke briefly about Bayler, having the letters BT on his cap.

Cape Cod League Top Performers for June 27th

C.J.CronUtah Here are the Top Performers from the Cape Cod Baseball League for Sunday, June 27th. The best game by a position player was by Utah’s C.J. Cron who went 4-4 with a double and a run scored against Harwich. The best pitching performance came from Andrew Gagnon of Long Beach State who pitched seven inning giving up only two hits and one walk while striking out nine batters.

Top 5 Coaches for Notre Dame Baseball

NDLogo Notre Dame recently announced on June 14th that they released Dave Schrage from his contract clearing the way for a new head coach for Notre Dame baseball. The Notre Dame job in the past has seen many great coaches come through South Bend including former Arizona State head coach Pat Murphy and current LSU head coach Paul Mainieri. They have also had some great players over the years from Wilie McGill from the late 1800’s to John Axford who made his major league debut on September 15th 2009. Over the last week or so, there has been some rumors across the nation on who will be the best coach for the Irish. Here are my top five if I was in charge of the search committee.

Cape Cod League Top Performers for June 26th

The Cape Cod Baseball League had a great pitching matchup on Saturday June 26th with LSU junior RHP Anthony Ranaudo facing off against UConn sophomore RHP Matt Barnes. Ranaudo’s Brewster Whitecaps picked up a 5-3 victory over the Barnes’ Wareham Gatemen. Ranaudo went 6.2 innings while letting up only one hit and one walk while striking out eight batters. Matt Barnes ended up going seven innings allowing four hits while giving up one run and striking out 14 batters. The other interesting piece of news is that Arizona State LHP Josh Spence continued his run in the CCBL by pitching three innings giving up three hits while giving up one earned run. South Carolina edges Clemson 4-3 to Advance to CWS Championship Series

MerrifieldCelebrationPhoto OMAHA – South Carolina edged rival Clemson, 4-3, in a tight seesaw affair on Saturday night in the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium, earning the right to face UCLA in the championship series beginning Monday at 6:30 p.m. CT.

The Gamecocks return to the CWS finals for the first time since 2002 and for the fourth time in program history. The win also improves South Carolina to 4-0 against Clemson in the CWS, including a pair of wins in 2002.

Trevor Bauer leads UCLA to 10-3 win over TCU; Advances to Championship Series

TrevorBauer OMAHA – The UCLA Bruins jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first and cruised to a 10-3 victory over the TCU Horned Frogs on Saturday afternoon in game 13 of the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium. The Bruins will play for their first national title beginning Monday at 6:30 p.m. CT against the winner of tonight’s contest between Clemson and South Carolina.

UCLA rode the coattails of starter Trevor Bauer’s 13-strikeout performance, making him the nation’s leader with 165 strikeouts this year. Bauer (12-3) retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced, fanning the last four hitters he faced before exiting after eight innings. He held the Frogs to three runs on four hits, as the Bruins held TCU to its lowest hit total of the year.

TCU and UCLA set to battle in Elimination Game at CWS

TCU Baseball The TCU Horned Frogs and UCLA Bruins will face off again today in an elimination game at the 2010 College World Series. TCU started the tourney with a victory over FSU by the score of 8-1 before dropping a 6-3 game to UCLA and bounced back with a 11-7 victory over Florida State again. They would defeat UCLA 6-2 on Friday to force a winner take all game against the Bruins on Saturday afternoon. UCLA picked up a 11-3 victory in their first game in Omaha over Florida before picking up a 6-3 win over TCU. On Friday, they dropped a 6-2 decision to the Horned Frogs to force a rematch on Saturday.
