2010 NCAA Regional Previews: Fullerton

#1 Fullerton (41-15, 21-3 Big West)

Dave Serrano’s Fullerton Titans had slow start to their season, similar to the one experienced before their run to the 2004 National Title. Serrano made a few changes with his squad, primarily by making Noe Ramirez the Friday starter. After starting the season at 4-7, Fullerton turned their season around and finished 41-15, which had them in contention to possibly be a national seed. Fullerton got over the hump during the season, but need to get over another certain obstacle called the Stanford Cardinal. The Cardinal have owned the Titans in the postseason as of late, most recently beating the Titans in 2 games in the 2008 Super Regional to advance to the College World Series.

#1 Arkansas (40-18, 18-12 SEC)

Golden Spikes award semifinalist Zack Cox is one of the most heralded players in the country, leading Arkansas to the College World Series in 2009 as well as winning the Cape Cod League MVP while playing for the Cotuit Keetlers.  Cox was held out of the SEC Tournament due to a lingering back injury, but has deemed himself ready for NCAA Tournament play.  The same cannot be said for Brett Eibner’s hand injury, which before the tournament Head Coach Dave Van Horne said was “getting worse.”  Both Cox (.432, 8 HR, 47 RBI) and Eibner (.332, 18 HR, 61 RBI) are projected to be first round picks in the 2010 MLB Draft.  Also leading the high powered Razorback offense are Sophomore OF Colin Kuhn (.343, 12 HR, 45 RBI) and Junior IF Andy Wilkins (.274, 13 HR, 62 RBI)

#1 Arizona State (47-8, 20-7 Pac-10)

The biggest story over the college baseball offseason was the abrupt departure of Head Coach Pat Murphy back in November.  Scrambling, the Sun Devils brought back the recently let-go Tim Esmay to coach the 2010 edition of the Arizona State Sun Devils.  Esmay still had the interim label placed on him up until this week when AD Lisa Love removed the label after the Sun Devils 46-win season and 4th straight Pac-10 title .  The Sun Devils only non-conference loss, was a conference loss, against Arizona. The Sun Devils hosted a mid-week game against Arizona on April 20th that didn’t go against conference standings, which they lost 4-2.

2010 NCAA Regional Previews: Austin (TX)

Austin Regional Anytime Texas and Rice get together, there are a few things that are guaranteed: 1. Great baseball. 2. Angry fans. 3. Great baseball.

Texas, the #2 national seed, picked up the regional hosting duties after posting a 46-11 record and winning the Big 12 Regular Season Championship by an amazing eight games before bowing out of the Big 12 Tournament with an 0-3 record. While most teams have a pitcher on their staff they designate as their ace, Texas has the advantage of boasting four such pitchers. Sophomore RHP Taylor Jungmann only managed to go 6-3 this season, but led the Texas starters with a 2.17 ERA, and struck out 113 batters over 104 innings. Junior RHP Cole Green was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year after finishing the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record. Green picked up his only loss in the conference tournament, finished with a 10-1 record and 2.64 ERA. Rounding out the starters, Junior RHP Brandon Workman picked up 11 wins versus only one loss. His 3.77 ERA was the largest on the entire pitching staff. If a team is lucky enough to get past the trio of starters, they still run into a brick wall with a great fastball and slider. Junior RHP Chance Ruffin because the first Longhorn player to record a 10-win season and a 10-save season in a career after he saved 13 games in his first year as the closer. Ruffin, son of Bruce, was named a finalist for NCBWA Stopper of the Year after striking out 89 over 58.1 innings and shrinking his ERA to 0.77.
