2010 NCAA Regional Previews: Fort Worth

tcu-10-ncaa-basebl-btn No. 1 TCU

With a starting lineup full of .300 or better hitters, the TCU Horned Frogs (a definite hall-of-fame team name if I’ve ever heard one) are the #1 seed in the Fort Worth Regional. TCU is on a seven game winning streak, winning the Mountain West Conference Tournament last weekend for the sixth time in seven years. Hosting the Regional looks to be a significant benefit for the Horned Frogs – they have won 23 of their 27 home games thus far this season.

Sophomore pitcher Kyle Winkler will start Friday’s game against #4 Lamar. Winkler, named to the MWC All-Tournament team last weekend, pitched a complete game last Thursday against UNLV. He has pitched over 100 innings this season. TCU has a strong pitching staff, with Matt Purke (12 wins), Steven Maxwell (2.73 ERA), Kaleb Merck (1.12 ERA) and Tyler Lockwood (4 saves.)

TCU only faced one team from their Regional field this season – Baylor, which they split a home and home series with in late April.

Garrett Wittels’ Pursuit Of Historic Streak Not Just An Individual Accomplishment

What do New Mexico State head baseball coach Rocky Ward and the teammates of Florida International sophomore third baseman Garrett Wittels have in common? They’ve both been a part of historic hitting streaks. Ward was the catcher on the 1987 Oklahoma State squad when Robin Ventura set the collegiate record with 58 consecutive games with a hit while Wittels’ teammates are witness to the longest hitting streak since that historic 1987 season.
Wittels carries the second longest hitting streak in college baseball history, 54 games, into the first game of the Miami Regional in Coral Gables, Fla. today at 12:00 p.m. ET where he and his teammates will square off against Texas A&M. While most of the national media focuses on the Wittels’ individual accomplishment, New Mexico State head coach Rocky Ward explains that Wittels’ teammates are just as much a part of the streak as Wittels is.

2010 NCAA Regional Previews: Norman

norman regional For the second postseason in a row, the NCAA Regionals are in Norman, Oklahoma. Joining the Oklahoma Sooners this year are #2 seed Cal, #3 seed North Carolina, and fourth seeded Oral Roberts.

Oklahoma (44-15, 15-10 Big 12)

Oklahoma finished the regular season eight games behind Texas for second place in the Big 12. The Sooners won two of their three games in the Big 12 tournament, but failed to advance to the Championship Game. Oklahoma’s year surprised many after the Sooners were devastated by the MLB Draft last June. A strong core of young players, led by All-Big 12 sophomore 3B Garrett Buechele (.393, 15 HR, 61 RBI) and sophomore 1B Cameron Seitzer (.331, 14 HR, 51 RBI) is bolstered with the addition of freshman LF Max White (.318, 14 HR, 39 RBI). The pitching staff compares equally to the hitting. Friday’s game is in the hands of junior RHP Michael Rocha (7-1, 3.02 ERA, 45 K in 56.2 IP), followed on Saturday by junior RHP Zach Neal (8-3, 4.52 ERA, 76K in 87.2 IP). If, and a little if that is, the Sooners make it to Sunday, junior RHP Bobby Shore (8-4, 4.52 ERA) and freshman LHP Ryan Gibson (5-2, 3.76 ERA) will be available. Junior RHP Ryan Duke (1-1, 3.00 ERA, 11 saves) will be ready to work the late innings if necessary.

2010 NCAA Regional Previews: Gainesville

#1 Florida Gators

FloridaBaseball2 The Gators are looking to redeem themselves this season after dropping their Super Regional series to Southern Miss in 2009.  Leading the way offensively is Freshman 3B Austin Maddox, who leads the team with 17 HR and 66 RBI while batting .339.  Maddox shows he hits well in the clutch, with 32 of his 66 RBI coming with two out.  Matt dan Dekker has had half of his 44 RBI come with two outs as well, and also leads the team in stolen bases with 21.  Behind the plate, Freshman C Mike Zunino is reportedly 100% after sitting out during the SEC Tournament with a hand injury.   Last year’s Gator Triple Crown winner Preston Tucker is hitting .389 over his last 10 contests and hopes to ride the hot streak all the way through the Super Regionals.
