LSU 11 UC-Irvine 10 (11 innings)

Widely regarded as the top first day Regional match-up in the country, the battle between UC Irvine and LSU lived up to the billing and then some in a thrilling contest at UCLA’s Jackie Robinson Stadium. A back and forth contest filled with quality pitching at times, several tremendous defensive plays and excellent hitting finally came to an end after 11 innings and more than four hours of play with LSU on top, 11-10.

2010 Fullerton Regional Day 1 Recap

Minnesota 3 Cal-State Fullerton 1

FULLERTON, CA – Minnesota’s Seth Rosin scattered just three hits over eight innings of work and the fourth-seeded Golden Gophers scored all the runs they would need in the first inning en route to a 3-1 upset of top-seeded Cal State Fullerton to close out the first day of the 2010 NCAA Baseball Regionals at Goodwin Field.

Minnesota (31-28, 1-0 in NCAA Regional play) advances in the winners bracket to face third-seeded New Mexico, a 9-5 winner over No. 2 Stanford earlier in the day. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. PDT or 50 minutes following the completion of the first game.

TEMPE, Ariz. – Merrill Kelly threw eight strong innings to lead the No. 1 Arizona State University baseball team to a 6-2 win over UW-Milwaukee in their first game of the Tempe Regional on Friday. A sellout crowd of 4,371 saw the Sun Devils improve to 48-8 on the season and advance to a winner’s bracket game with Hawai’i on Saturday.

Kelly settled down after a tough first inning, allowing only three hits and two runs (one earned) while matching his season high with eight strikeouts. He got the win to improve to 10-2, as he joins Seth Blair and Jake Borup to give ASU three double-digit game winners on the season. Mitchell Lambson pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two, to finish off the victory.

North Carolina 12 California 3

NORMAN, OKLA. — Junior Matt Harvey pitched six strong innings to lead North Carolina over California 12-2 Friday night in the second game of the Norman Regional at L. Dale Mitchell Park. UNC never trailed after a six-run first frame improving to 37-20 overall.

Harvey (8-3) notched nine strikeouts and allowed just two runs on four hits. The Mystic, Conn., native moves into ninth all-time in career strikeouts (263) and tenth all-time in career wins (22) in Tar Heel history. Freshman Michael Morin pitched 2.1 strong innings allowing just one run on four hits. Greg Holt closed out the game recording the final two outs.

Coastal Carolina 6 Stony Brook 0

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – In the opening game of the 2010 NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional, No. 4 national seed Coastal Carolina (52-7) fought off a pesky Stony Brook (29-26) squad for a 6-0 victory, June 4. With the win, the Chanticleers advance to the 7 p.m. Saturday game against the winner of tonight’s College of Charleston and NC State contest, while the Seawolves will play in the 1 p.m. elimination game tomorrow against tonight’s loser.

The contest was delayed 18 minutes at the beginning, as rain came out of the sky when Coastal starter junior Cody Wheeler was taking his final warm-up pitches. Despite the delayed start, the junior held the Seawolves scoreless in the first, as did SBU starter sophomore Nick Tropeano who struck out the side in the bottom of the opening inning.

The Chanticleers were the first on the board, scoring in the bottom of the second. Redshirt-sophomore Tommy LaStella led off with a single to left and moved to second on senior Adam Rice’s sacrifice bunt. A ground out advanced LaStella to third with two down and sophomore Daniel Bowman drove a single to left score LaStella and give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior first baseman Andrew Clark and sophomore second baseman Ryan Wright each hit home runs to lead the No. 7 Louisville baseball team to an 11-2 win over Saint Louis during Friday’s opening day of action at the NCAA Regional at Jim Patterson Stadium.

With the win, the top-seeded Cardinals (49-12) advance to the winner’s bracket game against No. 2 seeded Vanderbilt, an 8-7 winner in 13 innings over No. 3 Illinois State. First pitch for the Cardinals and Commodores is set for 4 p.m. ET on Saturday and single game tickets will be available at Jim Patterson Stadium on Saturday morning.

Florida 7 Bethune-Cookman 3

Freshman right-hander Hudson Randall (Atlanta, Ga.) notched a career-high 10 strikeouts over 7.1 innings as top-seeded Florida (43-15) defeated fourth-seeded Bethune-Cookman (35-21), 7-3, on Friday night at McKethan Stadium. In his NCAA Regional debut, the rookie (8-3) did not allow a hit until the fifth inning in picking up his sixth-straight victory. 

The fourth-ranked Gators will meet third-seeded Oregon State (32-22) in a winner’s bracket game at 7 p.m. tomorrow live on Sun Sports, while the Wildcats face second-seeded Florida Atlantic (35-23) in an elimination game at 1 p.m. The Beavers edged the Owls, 6-4, earlier this afternoon.

Fayetteville Regional Day 1 Recap

Arkansas 19 Grambling State 7

FAYETTEVILLE  – Aided by a school-record nine home runs, the No. 15 University of Arkansas downed Grambling, 19-7, Friday in game one of the NCAA Fayetteville Regional at Baum Stadium.Brett Eibner became the ninth player in program history to hit three home runs in one game, while Collin Kuhn, James McCann and Andy Wilkins each posted two home runs. Arkansas’ 19 runs are the second most scored by the program in an NCAA postseason game (20 vs. Eastern Kentucky, 1985).

"We came out aggressive offensively," head coach Dave Van Horn said. "We put up six in the first and jumped ahead of them. We basically got to work quickly on doing all the things we had been practicing during the week. We laid off a lot of borderline pitches and got into good hitting counts."

COLUMBIA, S.C. – A five-run rally in the eighth inning, propelled by a pair of home runs from Jackie Bradley Jr. and Adrian Morales, helped South Carolina overcome a four-run deficit and defeat Bucknell 9-5 in Friday’s second game of the NCAA Columbia Regional. The Gamecocks scored eight runs in their final three at-bats to secure their 12th-consecutive home postseason victory before 6,712 fans at Carolina Stadium.

Approximately 2,000 tickets (500 bleacher, 1,500 standing room only) are available for Saturday’s winner’s bracket game between South Carolina and The Citadel, which begins at 7 p.m. The Carolina Stadium ticket office opens at 12:30 p.m. Saturday with an elimination game between Bucknell and Virginia Tech slated for a 2 p.m. first pitch.

CHARLOTTESVILLE - In the opening game of the Charlottesville Regional, Virginia defeated VCU 15-4 on Friday at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers, the No. 5 national seed, totaled 15 runs on 16 hits as they opened regional play with a win for the fourth time in the past five years.

Virginia will meet Ole Miss at 6 p.m. Saturday. VCU will play St. John’s at 1 p.m. Saturday in an elimination game.

AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 3 Texas Longhorns scored all 11 of their runs with two outs in an 11-0 win over the Rider Broncs in NCAA Austin Regional action at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Brandon Workman (12-1) pitched his second shutout of the season. He scattered six hits and three walks while striking out seven over nine innings. He allowed just two hits through the first seven innings. It marked the ninth shutout of the season for the Longhorns.
