Tempe Regional Day 3 Recap

Arizona State 8 Hawaii 4

TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 1 Arizona State University baseball team defeated Hawai’i 8-4 on Sunday to win the Tempe Regional and advance to the Super Regional round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament. A crowd of 3,123 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark saw the Sun Devils improve to 50-8 on the season with the win. It is the second straight and 18th overall 50-win season for ASU.

Kole Calhoun had two hits, including a solo home run, his 15th of the season and third in the three games of the Regional, and he earned Tempe Regional Most Outstanding Player. Drew Maggi added two hits, including the go-ahead two-run double in the fourth inning, Riccio Torrez and Andrew Aplin also had two hits each and Deven Marrero had a two-run home run.

Norman Regional Day 3 Recap

North Carolina 12 Oral Roberts 4

NORMAN, OKLA. — Jacob Stallings matched a career-best three hits and Seth Baldwin ripped a three run home run to lead North Carolina over Oral Roberts 12-4 Sunday afternoon in game five of the Norman Regional at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Tar Heels improve to 38-21 and advance to face Oklahoma later tonight.

Chris Munnelly (3-2) earns the victory allowing just three runs on eight hits in five innings of work. Relievers Greg Holt,Zach Bernard, Cody Penny and Nate Striz combined to render just one run in four frames.

Myrtle Beach Regional Day 3 Recap

Coastal Carolina 25 Stony Brook 7

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Top-seeded Coastal Carolina (53-9) had a stretch of scoring in the final seven innings of the game, including 10 in the third inning, to seize momentum from No. 4 Stony Brook (30-27) in a 25-7 elimination-game victory on Sunday, June 6, in the NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional at BB&T Coastal Field. The win advances Coastal to tonight’s 7 p.m. championship round game against College of Charleston.

Redshirt-freshman Jackson Geary (1-0) earned his first career win with four innings in relief of freshman starter Josh Conway. Geary allowed four runs (one earned) in his four innings of work with three hits and a walk. Conway went the first four innings with two hits and two runs allowed. Stony Brook’s Adam Brown (5-6) took the loss for the Seawolves, allowing eight earned runs in 3.2 innings pitched.

Louisville Regional Day 3 Recap

LOUISVILLE , Ky.— Junior southpaw Richie Goodenow, in his first start of the year and just the second start in 68 career outings, held Louisville to only two hits and faced just two over the minimum to lead Vanderbilt to a 7-0 win Sunday afternoon at the NCAA Louisville Regional.

For the second straight year, the Commodores (44-18) will force a second championship game against the Cardinals (50-13) Monday night at 5 p.m. CT/ 6 p.m. ET, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Super Regionals.

Gainesville Regional Day 3 Recap

Behind a three-homer, six-RBI performance from sophomore Tyler Thompson (Tequesta, Fla.) and seven scoreless innings by freshman left-hander Brian Johnson (Cocoa Beach, Fla.), top-seeded Florida (45-15) blanked Florida Atlantic (37-24), 15-0, to capture the NCAA Gainesville Regional on Sunday night at McKethan Stadium. The Gators unleashed a 19-hit barrage that featured a school postseason record six home runs and the duo of redshirt sophomore Tommy Toledo (Tampa, Fla.) and junior Kevin Chapman (Coral Springs, Fla.) each worked an inning without yielding a run to complete the shutout.

In becoming the first Florida player to belt three homers in a postseason game, Thompson (4-for-5) enjoyed a career night, matching his career high of four hits and setting personal bests in runs (four) and RBI (six). Johnson (6-4) was named the Regional’s Most Outstanding Player after hitting .625 (5-for-8) at the plate this weekend and the southpaw scattered six hits over seven innings and was 3-for-5 with a solo shot in tonight’s Regional title game.

FULLERTON, CA – Cal State Fullerton’s Corey Jones finished with three hits, including his seventh home run of the season, and three RBI to lead a trio of Titans with three hits on the day, helping his team to an 11-3 victory over third-seeded New Mexico in an elimination game at the 2010 NCAA Baseball Regional at Goodwin Field.

Top-seeded Fullerton (43-16 overall, 2-1 in NCAA Regional play) advances to the regional championship against unbeaten and fourth-seeded Minnesota later tonight at 8 p.m. PDT. Should the Titans defeat the Golden Gophers, the two teams would meet in a winner-take-all game seven on Monday night (June 7) at 8 p.m. PDT.

Fort Worth Regional Day 3 Recap

FORT WORTH, Texas – Willie Kempf turned in the longest outing of his career to lead Baylor to a 4-2 win over third-seeded Arizona in Sunday afternoon’s elimination game in the Fort Worth Regional at Lupton Stadium.

With the win, Baylor (36-23) advances to the championship round against regional-host TCU. The Bears and Horned Frogs meet at 7 p.m. Sunday night, and if Baylor wins, there will be a 7 p.m. rematch on Monday to determine the regional champion.

Fayetteville Regional Day 3 Recap

Washington State 10 Arkansas 7

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Derek Jones collected four hits and James Wise picked up the win in his second start of the day on the mound as No. 23 Washington State defeated No. 15 Arkansas 10-7 in a NCAA Baseball Regional at Baum Stadium, Sunday.

With the victory, the Cougars (37-21) forced a winner-take-all match-up with the Razorbacks (42-19), Monday night at 7:05 Central/5:05 Pacific.

"Two things you can’t coach are effort and heart," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "I am so proud of my team for showing both of those things today."

Los Angeles Regional Day 3

The defending national champions got knocked down early and after nine innings in the Sunday elimination game at Jackie Robinson Stadium, they were out. UC Irvine jumped ahead early, extended their lead a bit and then hung on to take out LSU and send the throngs of purple and gold clad Tiger fans home disappointed with a 4-3 win. COLUMBIA, S.C. – Virginia Tech held off The Citadel 4-3 in an elimination game of the NCAA Columbia Regional on Sunday afternoon at Carolina Stadium, and will now face undefeated host South Carolina at 7 p.m.

Should the Hokies (40-21) defeat the eighth-ranked Gamecocks tonight, the two will meet again on Monday at 7 p.m., to determine who advances to the Super Regional. No matter what happens, the Hokies, 2-1 in the regional, have now won two games in the same NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1954.

Charlottesville Regional Day 3

St. John’s 20 Ole Miss 16

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Matt Wessinger had five RBI and finished a home run shy of the cycle as the St. John’s offense erupted in a 20-16 win against No. 22 Mississippi. Wessinger was 4-for-5, Jimmy Brennan was 4-for-6 with four RBI, and Joe Panik and Paul Karmas had three RBI apiece to lead St. John’s (42-19). Bruce Kern(7-5) allowed seven runs and had five strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work to earn the win. Matt Snyder was 5-for-6 with six RBI to lead Ole Miss (39-24).
