Mik Aoki to Notre Dame; Gambino set to take over Boston College?

MikAokiBostonCollege UPDATED STORY AVAILABLE HERE ON JULY 6th.

According to multiple sources, Mik Aoki will be named the next head coach at Notre Dame after spending the last four seasons as the head coach of the Boston College Eagles. He led the Eagles to the NCAA Tourney in 2009 but that was the only NCAA appearance. He finished the 2010 season with a 30-28 record while going 14-16 in ACC play. His career record with the Eagles was 114-104-1 while having a career head coaching record of 201-248-1 after spending five seasons in charge of the Columbia program before becoming the pitching coach at Boston College under former BC and current VT head coach Peter Hughes.

Aoki has had the worst facility in the ACC and has been able to compete over the last couple of seasons. The recruiting has seemed to drop off the last few seasons as they have not had any stellar young arms develop over the last couple of years.

We have had an excellent relationship with Aoki over the last couple of season as he has been a fixture of doing interviews with the site. You can check out his 2010 interview here and his 2008 interview by clicking here.

Rumor is that 1999 Boston College graduate Mike Gambino is set to take over the baseball program next season but he hasn’t interviewed for the position yet and is on a short list with current BC assistant coach Joe Hastings for the opening. My best bet would be on Gambino returning to the program.

If Aoki leaving is true they better get someone better than Gambino. He is too young and needs more experience.

I think this type of news is what is wrong with the Boston College program. The administration has really neglected the program in the last couple of years and it has been known around the College Baseball world that Aoki was a hot candidate for opening around the country.

Hopefully they don’t go the way of Boston University…

Gambino played and coached in the minor leagues and is older than Hughes was when he took over at BC. Plus, he’s a BC grad!

The BC roster didn’t look very deep this year and if Aoki is leaving it seems like BC isn’t willing to committ to serioulsy competing in the ACC. Perhaps BC will never be more then a training ground for head coaches that will move onto better oppourtunities after 3-4 years. I’d like to see Gambino stay at VT, but d1 jobs don’t come around that often. Plus if most of the VT draftee’s don’t sign, VT have a very strong club and should do better then this year…..

Looks like UConn is going to be the northeast team for at least the next couple years now

Agreed with Springer and Barnes entering their junior seasons. You also have Mazilli who is an up and coming player.

I can’t believe Notre Dame is not going after the best out there. If you are going to fire (rightfully) the head coach with one contract year left, you better go get the best coach available.
Dangler, Gilmore, etc. Not someone with a below .500 career record.
