2010 NCAA Regional Previews: Charlottesville

CharlottsevilleRegional The Virginia Cavaliers will be hosting a regional this year which features the number 1 seeded Cavaliers, number 2 seeded Ole Miss, number 3 seeded St. John’s, and VCU rounds out the field as the fourth seed.

Virginia (47-11 overall, 23-7 ACC)

The Virginia Cavaliers enter the 2010 NCAA Regionals with a 47-11 overall record and won the ACC Regular Season crown as they went 23-7. They went 2-1 in the ACC Tournament but ended up losing a tiebreaker to Florida State for a spot in the Championship game. They have a team batting average of .333 with 55 homers. The Cavs top hitter is Phil Gosselin who is hitting .379 with nine homers and 54 RBI while stealing 16 bases in 20 attempts. Danny Hultzen has been the ace of the pitching staff this season as he is 9-1 with a 2.43 ERA in 14 appearances. Robert Morey has also taken the hill 14 times this season as he is 9-3 with a 3.60 ERA. The bullpen is lead by Stopper of the Year candidate Kevin Arico who is 1-1 with a 2.93 ERA in 26 appearances.

Ole Miss (38-22 overall, 16-14 SEC)

The Ole Miss Rebels head to Charlottesville with a 38-22 overall record after going 2-2 in the SEC Tourney with wins over South Carolina and Auburn while losing to Alabama and LSU. The Ole Miss offense is average with a .287 batting average. Matt Smith leads the team with a .344 average with 12 homers in 55 games. Tim Ferguson is a formidable competitor as he is hitting .301 with 24 stolen bases in 28 attempts. The Ole Miss pitching staff has a team ERA of 4.62 which is high for a team that has a first round talent in Drew Pomeranz leading them. He has a 8-2 record with 2.21 ERA in 15 appearances. Brett Huber leads the team with 12 saves while having a 2-0 record with a 2.54 ERA.

St. John’s (40-18 overall, 16-11 Big East)

The St. John’s Red Storm made a late push this season to get into the NCAA Tournament as they sport a 40-18 overall record while going 16-11 in the Big East. They went a perfect 4-0 in the Big East Tourney defeating South Florida, Louisville (twice), and UConn in the championship game. They are hitting .327 as team as Jeremy Baltz leads them with a .393 batting average while hitting 20 homers and driving in 74 runs. Joe Panik is second on the squad with a .383 average. Kyle Hansen heads up the pitching staff as he is 8-1 with a 3.09 ERA in 16 appearances (13 starts). Daniel Burawka leads the bullpen with 11 saves while having a 1-0 record with a 2.78 ERA.

Virginia Commonwealth (34-24-1 overall, 17-7-1)

The Virginia Commonwealth Rams got the conference’s automatic bid by win the CAA Conference Tourney. They went 34-24-1 overall while going 17-7-1 in the conference. They are led on offense by Joe Van Meter who is hitting .433 with 10 homers while driving in 72 runs. Richard Gonzalez is second on the squad with a .391 batting average while he has stolen 20 bases in 26 attempts. The pitching staff has a team ERA of 5.15. Seth Cutler-Voltz is the top starting pitcher as he is 8-3 with a 3.20 ERA in 16 starts totaling 115.1. Robbie Andrews leads the team with nine saves and has a record of 1-2 including an ERA of 3.18.
