SEC Recap for May 7th

FloridaBaseball #6 Florida 9 Alabama 3

Florida freshman right-hander Hudson Randall (Atlanta, Ga.) twirled seven shutout innings and all nine starters contributed a hit as the fourth-ranked Gators (32-11/16-6 SEC) defeated Alabama (28-18/9-13 SEC), 9-3, on Friday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The victory matched UF’s season-best winning streak of six games and kept head coach Kevin O’Sullivan’s club one game behind league-leading South Carolina (36-9/17-5 SEC), a 13-9 winner at Kentucky.

Randall (6-3) claimed his fourth-straight win by yielding eight hits, with three strikeouts and a walk. Freshman Mike Zunino (Cape Coral, Fla.) (2-for-4) drove in three runs, freshman Nolan Fontana (Winter Garden, Fla.) went 3-for-5 with two runs and two doubles and freshman Austin Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla.) (2-for-5, two RBI) connected on his team-best 14th homer. The Gators also turned a season-high four double plays.

ATLANTA – Derek Dietrich and Jeff Rowland reached base in every at-bat, and senior Tony Plagman drove in the go-ahead run with his 200th-career RBI to lead the fifth-ranked Georgia Tech baseball team (37-9) over Illinois-Chicago (17-24), 8-4, Friday evening at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Dietrich (4-for-4, RBI) and Rowland (3-for-3, 3 runs, 3 RBI) paced the Jackets at the plate, as Dietrich hit two doubles and Rowland added a triple and home run while coming up a double short of the cycle. In addition to reaching base on every at-bat, Rowland scored all three times.

Southland Conference Recap for May 7th

ARLINGTON, Texas - Jason Mitchell threw a three-hit shutout and Preston Beck hit a walk-off double to lead UT Arlington to a 1-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin Friday at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The victory puts the Mavericks (25-22, 17-8 Southland Conference) in second place in the conference with a narrow lead in the standings over the Lumberjacks (30-13, 16-8 Southland), who dropped just their fourth road game of the season (15-4).

CBB Visit: BC storms back to take Game 1 from FSU

RobbieAnstonBC The Florida State Seminoles headed north to take on the Boston College Eagles in the first game of an important three game set for both schools. The Eagles sent sophomore RHP Mike Dennhardt to the hill who had a 3-6 record and an ERA of 6.39 while Florida State countered with sophomore LHP Sean Gilmartin who was 6-4 with a 3.80 ERA.

Florida State got off to a great start to the game with Tyler Holt getting a lead off walk which was followed by a Stephen Cardullo homer over the left field fence to give the Seminoles the early 2-0 lead. Florida State would scratch across another run in the inning on two more hits to give the Noles the 3-0 lead after the top of the first. BC leadoff hitter Robbie Anston would lead off the bottom of the first with a long homer over the right field wall to cut the FSU lead down to 3-1.

WAC Weekend Preview (05/07 – 05/09)

Week five of play in the Western Athletic Conference sees the battle between rivals New Mexico State and Fresno State with first place on the line.  The two teams faced each other for the conference championship in last year’s conference tournament as Fresno State staved off two elimination games to win the tournament title for the fourth consecutive season.  Sacramento State visits Louisiana Tech while San Jose State head to Reno to face Nevada.

CBB Column: Ivy League Championship Series Preview

eisen When Dartmouth faces Columbia in the Ivy League Championships this weekend, pitching may be important, but Lions Coach Brett Boretti knows what the difference maker will be.

“I think offense, in the post season, is the difference maker,” claimed Boretti in a chat this week. “It is tough for both teams to get started offensively.”

The Big Green (23-15, 13-7) and Lions (25-19, 14-6) both are chock-filled of new players on offense, and when they faced each other in April, they played two very similar games, according to Boretti. “We both evenly played a day of baseball,” he said of the split. “We had one big inning one day, they had one big inning the next. Otherwise, it was even.”

SEC Weekend Preview (May 7th-9th)

The SEC enters the third to last weekend of action with the marquee series this weekend featuring the number 10 ranked Arkansas Razorbacks heading down to #15 Ole Miss. The opener to the series will have Arkansas sending Drew Smyly (7-0, 2.19 ERA) to the hill against Ole Miss ace Drew Pomeranz (6-0, 1.85 ERA). The other series in the SEC featuring two ranked squads is #19 Vanderbilt visiting #17 LSU. The rest of the conference schedule sees #6 Florida visiting Alabama, Mississippi State visiting #28 Auburn, #11 ranked South Carolina heading to Kentucky, and Tennessee hosting Georgia. ACC Weekend Preview for May 7th-9th

The ACC has a relatively light schedule this week with only three in-conference series. The best series is between Florida State and Boston College. Florida State enters that series with a three game led over Clemson while having only a 3.5 game lead over Boston College. The other series with some importance is between Wake Forest and North Carolina. The Tar Heels are in need of a sweep this weekend if they are going to get a bid into the ACC Tournament. The last ACC series is between Clemson and Maryland where the Tigers are looking to sweep the Terps. Georgia Tech heads out of conference against a feisty Illinois-Chicago squad, Barry University visits Miami (FL) for two games and Savannah State will face off against Virginia Tech to round out the ACC weekend slate. NCAA And CWS, INC., Announce College World Series Legends Team

NCAA logo INDIANAPOLIS - As part of the commemoration of the final Series in Omaha’s Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium, the NCAA and College World Series, Inc., have announced the official College World Series Legends Team.

The 28 members of the Legends Team, pared down from an original list of 95 nominees, were selected after more than 100,000 votes were cast by college baseball fans, college baseball writers and Division I head baseball coaches. The members of the Legends Team are former student-athletes and coaches who had the best CWS performances throughout the 60 years the event has been played at Rosenblatt Stadium.

We used Boyd’s World RPI which was updated through games on Tuesday as that was the latest available. CBB Interview with Larry Casian (U. of Portland)

LarryCasian Larry Casian is an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the University of Portland Pilots. The Pilots are 31-9, 11-1 in the West Coast Conference. They are ranked #22, and have won 11 straight. They will host the University of San Diego Toreros this weekend in a battle for first place in the WCC.

Bob Broughton, CBB: You had a fairly interesting professional career, including some time in the Major Leagues. What can you tell us about it?

Larry Casian: I got drafted in the sixth round out of Cal State Fullerton. Pitched for the Minnesota Twins for parts of four years. Chicago Cubs for parts of three years, and then a couple of other teams.
