Powered by three home runs and outstanding relief pitching, No. 4 Florida (34-12) dealt Sun Belt Conference leader Florida Atlantic (31-19) a 7-3 setback on Wednesday night at McKethan Stadium. Austin Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla.) tied the Gators’ single-season record homers by a freshman with his 16th to even the game in the third, senior Matt den Dekker (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) put the hosts in front with a two-run shot in the fifth and freshman Nolan Fontana (Winter Garden, Fla.) provided insurance with a two-run blast in the seventh.

Senior Jeff Barfield (Perry, Ga.) (3-0) tossed four scoreless frames to collect the win and the trio of sophomore Tommy Toledo (Tampa, Fla.), sophomore Greg Larson (Longwood, Fla.) and junior Kevin Chapman (Coral Springs, Fla.) each threw one scoreless inning as Florida improved to 24-3 at home this season.

DELAND, Fla. – Fifth-ranked Florida State (37-12) wrapped up its non-conference regular season schedule with a 6-2 victory over Stetson (25-25) Wednesday evening on Melching Field at Conrad Park. With the win, the Seminoles defeated the Hatters for the 12th time in a row, while extending their win streak to five on Stetson’s home turf.

Hunter Scantling worked 6.0 plus innings to improve to 3-2 on the year. The sophomore right hander allowed two runs on seven hits as he walked two and struck out three. Scantling survived three line drives back toward the mound on Wednesday night in leading the Seminoles to the season sweep over the Hatters.

Vandy Baseball Unites Nashville

05-11-10 - Photos of May 11th charity baseball game between Vanderbilt and the Louisville Cardinals with proceeds of the donations going to help Nashville flood victims through the Red Cross. Coaches and former players (like Shane Foster) from all of the Athletic teams showed up to help raise money & awareness of the local disaster. The game went into extra innings with a 8 - 8 tie. (Vanderbilt University - Steve Green) They came from all parts of Middle Tennessee. Some were Vanderbilt fans, some were not, but when they entered the gates of Hawkins Field on Tuesday night, they were all a part of one team.
It has been a little more than a week since flood waters devastated homes and businesses in Middle Tennessee, taking the livelihood and even the lives of many Tennesseans.

Fans arrived at Hawkins Field with their own experiences from a time they will never forget, but would just as well never known. Some had been spared from the flooding, some had minor damage and others had lost everything. Even those fortunate enough to be spared from losing something tangible, likely knew of someone in Middle Tennessee who was affected.

NASHVILLE — Jason Esposito’s solo home run off the roof of adjacent Memorial Gym in the bottom of the 17th inning lifted Vanderbilt to an 11-10 win over Louisville Tuesday night at Hawkins Field.

The Commodores won their third straight game to improve to 36-13 overall while the Cardinals fell to 40-9 on the year.

U of L reliever Andy Flett recorded the first two outs of the 17th before Esposito crushed a 0-1 changeup over the "Green Monster" fence in left field and onto Memorial Gym to win the game. It was his team leading ninth homer of the year, ending a game that went five hours and 33 minutes.

CBB Column: 2010 NCAA Regional Projections (May 12th)

The College Baseball Blog continues our weekly countdown to the release of the 2010 NCAA Regional Brackets. The brackets are done as if the NCAA Tournament was set to begin today. We used Boyd’s World RPI which was updated through games on Tuesday as that was the latest available. Greenville, SC – Jeff Schaus, Wilson Boyd, and John Hinson all hit home runs and freshman righthander Scott Firth pitched 6.0 strong innings in #22 Clemson’s 12-1 win over Furman in front of 3,417 fans at Fluor Field on Tuesday night. The Tigers, who won both games of the season series with the Paladins, improved to 32-17 and upped their winning streak to seven games. Furman dropped to 13-33.

The Tigers broke open a close game with seven runs in the fifth inning, keyed by a two-run homer by Schaus and a grand slam by Boyd.

NAIA Recap for May 11th

The final NAIA Coaches’ Poll of the season, scheduled to be released today, has been postponed until tomorrow (May 12) because of the Bellevue situation. The poll will be published in this space when it is released.

What is the “Bellevue situation”? The NAIA has ruled that Bellevue has forfeited all but two games of of their entire season, including all of their Midlands Collegiate Athletics Conference games. Long Beach State’s Mike Weathers Announces Retirement; Troy Buckley to Take Over

Long Beach, Calif. – Long Beach State head baseball coach Mike Weathers has announced his retirement from baseball effective at the end of the 2010 season.

“After 18 years at Long Beach State, nine as an assistant and nine as head coach, I feel it is time to step aside and let someone else lead the program,” Weathers said. “I’ve wanted to spend more time with my wife, Charlotte, my daughters and my grandson and this will allow me to do that. I’m anxious to start the next stage of my life and I am excited to continue to watch the Dirtbags compete for championships.”

2010 All-Patriot League Baseball Teams and Major Awards

AndrewBrouseBucknell Center Valley, Pa. – The four teams that advanced to the Patriot League Baseball Tournament beginning this weekend also received the individual honors from the League’s coaches on Tuesday, as Bucknell, Army, Holy Cross and Lehigh each garnered one of the four major awards.

Bucknell senior outfielder Andrew Brouse earned Player of the Year honors, while Army senior pitcher Matt Fouch was named the League’s Pitcher of the Year. Holy Cross freshman catcher Stephen Wadsworth is the Patriot League Rookie of the Year, with Lehigh Head Coach Sean Leary as the Coach of the Year.

Big Ten Players of the Week

Dickerson earns Player of the Week honors after leading Indiana to a series victory on the road against Northwestern over the weekend. The sophomore hit .583, reaching base at a .643 clip and slugging 1.167 to combine for an OPS of 1.810. He tallied multiple hits in all three games, including a 3-for-4 performance in the series opener in which he scored twice and drove in three runs with the help of a two-run homer. He hit his Big Ten-leading 20th home run in Game 2 of the series, also hitting a double to go 2-for-4. In the series finale, he drove in the only run of a 1-0 contest with one of his two singles in the game. Dickerson earns his second weekly honor of the season and leads the Big Ten in several statistical categories including average (.424), slugging (.827), RBI (63) and home runs (20).

NCBWA Players of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)­ released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending May 9, today. West Virginia junior outfielder Grant Buckner was named National Hitter of the Week, while San Diego junior right-hander Kyle Blair was named National Pitcher of the Week.  The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

The Case for Wood Bats Gaining Steam

brokenbat2_485 Multiple Conference Commissioners in Division II baseball are exploring the idea of introducing wood bats universally to their level of play in 2012. It seems that this season we have seen multiple incidents involving balls hit at the pitcher that have inflicted harm. Tommy Toledo of Florida was struck in the face with a line drive that required surgery, and he is yet to return. Corey Williams of Vanderbilt was struck by a line drive on this now infamous play against the Gators, and the result was a broken kneecap and surgery. Also, Nick Capito of UCSB was struck in the face a few weeks back, but returned for his next scheduled start.
