CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The top-ranked Virginia baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep over No. 21 North Carolina Saturday afternoon at Davenport Field, winning 3-2 in the opener and 5-1 in the second game to run its win streak to 13 games.

In the opener, John Barr (Jr., Ivyland, Pa.) hit a game-winning single to score Jarrett Parker (Jr., Stafford, Va.) with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Cavaliers to a thrilling win in front of a stadium-record crowd of 4,257. In the finale, Robert Morey (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) tossed a complete-game three-hitter and UVa hit two homers in the 5-1 win.

Patriot League Semifinal Preview

FROM PATRIOT LEAGUE RELEASE

Matt Perry Holy Cross Center Valley, Pa. – Top-seeded Army will go for its second consecutive championship with No. 2 Lehigh, No. 3 Holy Cross and No. 4 Bucknell all vying to dethrone the Black Knights in the Patriot League Baseball Tournament starting this weekend. No. 4 Bucknell is at No. 1 Army with No. 3 Holy Cross at No. 2 Lehigh in the semifinal series, with a doubleheader on Saturday and game three, if necessary, on Sunday.

For the third year in a row, the Patriot League Baseball Tournament includes four teams and will be played over two weekends. The top two seeds host the best-of-three semifinals, with the highest remaining seed at home for next week’s Championship series. Every game in the Tournament is nine innings long. The visiting team will have the last at-bat in game two of every series.

We saw three top ten teams drop their series openers tonight with the biggest victory being the North Carolina State Wolfpack over the Florida State Seminoles.

A bases-loaded sacrifice fly by freshman Mike Zunino (Cape Coral, Fla.) in the bottom of the ninth enabled No. 4 Florida (35-12/18-7 SEC) to pull out a 4-3 victory over Georgia (14-34/3-20 SEC) in front of a season-high 5,363 fans on Friday night at McKethan Stadium. Down 3-2 entering the final frame, the Gators capitalized on a pair of Bulldog errors and scored twice without any hits to earn the win. UF kept pace with No. 7 South Carolina (39-11/18-7 SEC) on top of the league standings, as the Gamecocks nipped No. 10 Arkansas (38-12/16-9 SEC) in Fayetteville, 3-2.

Purdue maintained a share of the Big Ten lead with an 8-2 win at Illinois on Friday evening. The Boilermakers got big innings late in the game with a four-run sixth and a three-run eighth, led by Eric Charles and Kevin Plawecki, who both had a pair of RBI. Charles went 1-for-4 with a double, while Plawecki was 2-for-4 with his eighth home run. Matt Bischoff picked up his ninth win of the year in a complete-game effort, allowing two runs on six hits and no walks with six strikeouts. Lee Zerrusen was tagged with the loss. Josh Parr led the Illini at the plate, going 1-for-3 with an RBI triple.

ATLANTA – Chase Burnette drove in four runs and Jay Dantzler three Friday night to back the four-hit pitching of Deck McGuire, and Georgia Tech captured the opener of a key Atlantic Coast Conference series over Miami, 14-3, at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Tech (40-9, 18-7 ACC), ranked No. 6 in the nation, won its fifth straight game and reached 40 victories in a season for the 21st time in its history. More importantly, the Yellow Jackets moved into a tie for the ACC Coastal Division lead with the fifth-ranked Hurricanes (36-12, 18-7) and Virginia. Miami’s seven-game winning streak came to an end.

NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round Pairings Announced

NAIA Baseball National ChampionshipThe NAIA Baseball National Championship tournament starts with nine tournaments with five teams in each tournament field. This “Opening Round” will be played May 18-21. The nine winners, plus host team Lewis-Clark State, qualify for the NAIA Baseball National Championship in Lewiston, ID May 28-June 4. Wired with Cal-State Fullerton’s Greg Bergeron

GregBergeronFullerton Cal-State Fullerton assistant coach Greg Bergeron recently wore a microphone as he served as the third base coach. He is currently in his third season with the Titans after working with Coach Serrano previously at UC-Irvine. Bergeron is in charge of running the teams offense while handling the hitting and fielding instruction. The video gives you great insight on how the Titans offense is run by Coach Bergeron and if your a coach at any level you can pick up some great insight for your players. CBB I know that this site has been having intermittent issues with Malware over the last week or so due to a security issue in the server. We have been working on it for over the last week and once it seems we have corrected the issue, another one pops up. ACC Weekend Preview (May 14th-16th)

We enter the second to last week of ACC action with ten out of the 12 teams in action. (Boston College and Maryland are both off from conference play). The biggest series of the weekend features the Miami Hurricanes playing the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Atlanta as both teams look to make their final push for the Divisional title and a Regional Seed for the NCAA Tourney. The other big series is between the number 21 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels who are a bubble team for the NCAA Tourney taking on the number 2 ranked Virginia Cavs in Charlottesville. The other weekend action sees NC State visiting #8 Florida State, Duke going to #16 Virginia Tech and #19 Clemson going to Wake Forest.

WAC Weekend Preview (05/13 – 05/16)

Week six of WAC play sees a change at the top of the standings at Fresno State swept league leader New Mexico State to move percentage points ahead of the Aggies in the standings.  New Mexico State holds a half game lead on the Bulldogs but Fresno State’s slightly higher winning percentage would give the Bulldogs the top seed if the season were to end today.

NAIA Top 25 and Recap for May 12th

Results of the NAIA Coaches’ Poll for May 12, 2010, and Boyd Nation’s Iterative Strength Rating. This is the final poll for the 2010 season, and will be used for seeding the NAIA Opening Round tournaments, which start May 18. (poll below)

Henry Buenrostro#1 Lewis-Clark State defeated Division III George Fox 7-3, and defeated Division I Seattle U. Twice, 8-7 and 5-3. The game against George Fox was tied in the seventh inning, and the Warriors needed an RBI single by Jack Eccles and a sacrifice fly by Kawika Emsley-Pai to get the first win against Seattle U. Hentry Buenrostro got a win in this game, and a save in the second game. Arlo Evasick went 7 2/3 innings for the Redhawks in the second game. He held the Warriors to one run during the first seven innings, but gave up a three-run home run by DH Pat Murray with two out in the eighth to get the loss. The three runs were unearned, and the home run was only the fourth hit given up by Evasick.

The regular season is over for the Warriors, and they finished it with a 16-game winning streak. A game scheduled at Gonzaga next week was cancelled, and the Redhawks were the only Division I team the Warriors played this year. The next game for the Warriors will be at the NAIA Baseball National Championship, which starts May 28. Read the rest of this entry »
